Abuse, be it emotional or physical, is a funny thing. Not ‘ha ha’ funny, mind you, but the way it can twist your mind is surreal. If you’ve never lived it, you may not get it. In Little Conversations, Devin’s struggle is more than just trying to get over a first love. It is finding her way out of the darkness Jake has wrapped around her. It is easy for anyone to say they would never let someone treat them that way, but there are reasons people can’t escape it. It starts out slowly, stealthily twisting and burrowing into your soul until you feel completely worthless. I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad that some readers may not get Devin’s battered psyche. I’m bummed that they may not connect with this story, yet I’m thankful that they have never suffered through an emotionally abusive situation like Devin’s.
