Detroit Free Press Review of All Mortal Greatness
Review of “All Mortal Greatness”
Author Nelson Cover
Reviewed by John J. Kelly, Detroit Free Press
Amid what are assumed to be the staid, hallowed halls of Sessions University, there is, instead, sex, spies, and murder. Who knew so much excitement was going on in those humdrum administration offices?
In Nelson Cover’s third book of the Sessions series, “All Mortal Greatness,” he covers all the buzzy topics ripped from today’s headlines. There is cybercrime and drones and bitcoin and more! And, in addition to all that, there is a genuine murder mystery to be solved. When the interim college president is killed while he was walking home from the college by a drone with a 3D-printed ghost gun, the chase is on.
Protagonist Thomas Simpson, along with billionaire bestie Mark Berger and brilliant medical researcher Zoltan Vastag, who all have ties to the university and its best interests at heart, begin their own investigation to solve the crime and end up doing it faster than the authorities.
Along the way, there are plenty of thrilling close calls and some interesting capers, as well as some romantic encounters. Cover’s attention to detail is stunning, with intricate descriptions of the characters, what they are wearing, their quirks and dialect that make you feel like you know them well.
This novel masterfully blends suspense, academic intrigue, and complex characters, making it a must-read for fans of Dan Brown.
The dialogue is brisk and feels very of the moment and combined with the modern tech, really brings the storyline into its place in the 21st century.
The author has created a page-turner that you won’t want to put down until they run down the clever suspect behind the shocking murder. But the journey is well worth it for all the intriguing side characters you will encounter along the way. It is compelling and funny and ends with a rocket of a twist. Highly recommended.

Politics, Murder, Secrets, Lust & Plots at a University, Just Normal Life!
First of all, this is Book #3 in Nelson Cover’s ‘Sessions University’ series, and as such I came into the story having not read the first two installments. Nevertheless, the author does a terrific job of bringing the reader up to speed on the sorted stories which had been plaguing the university for years. The descriptions of the players offers insight into their personalities as slowly but surely the pieces fall into their proper place and events move forward.
One can easily believe how government, corporate and donor groups are impacting the running of the university, and creating situations where forces behind the scenes commit heinous crimes to protect secrets and their turf. Killings from previous installments and then a brazen, high-tech assassination—with a drone—drags up old skeletons and ushers in complications on top of complications. The main character, Thomas Simpson, has more than his share of problems, frankly I kept expecting him to say, “I quit, effective now, and I am leaving town right away with my family, goodbye, call me when all this is over.”
Surprises lurk around every turn, and a big one hits you at the end—one I could never have predicted. I look forward to the next installment and will have to get back on track a bit.

In the third installment of the Sessions series, Dr. Thomas Simpson is excited to begin his new job as executive director of a foundation. His boss, Mark Berger, billionaire board member and Sessions University alumnus, wants his foundation to work closely with the university, especially with their cutting-edge medical center and its revolutionary cancer research. The two are also working closely with Sessions to help the academic institution move forward after nearly two years of scandal.
All this is about to be thrown into disarray when a cyberattack hits the university’s admissions portal and their interim president, Don Powers, is assassinated by a drone carrying a 3D-printed untraceable gun. Are the two incidents related? As the police and FBI continue their investigations, there seems to be no shortage of villains targeting Sessions. Indeed, all of them seem to still be orbiting the university in one way or another. When another drone attack unsuccessfully targets other administration officials, Simpson, Berger, and Simpson’s friend and cancer researcher Dr. Zoltan, are left to investigate their own lead. A confrontation and reckoning are coming, but will all three be prepared for the soul-searching that this will bring?
Cover’s continuing series takes a peek behind the ivory tower to the nuts and bolts of running a top-level university. The author’s own real-life career choice, and events during that time, help lend a feeling of verisimilitude to the situation that he places the characters in, while also using it to inform their reactions. It is highly recommended that the earlier books of the series be read, as nearly all of the characters are introduced in previous novels, but readers who start with the third book will find it easy to pick up the overall plot thread. Readers who like mystery thrillers, stories about contemporary academia, and even some dark academia fans, may like this series of novels.

Latest Review for All Mortal Greatness

‘All mortal greatness is but disease’ – Melville A brilliant mystery novel!
Florida author Nelson Cover comes to his writing of mind-spinning novels with the credentials of having served as a non-profit administrator and consultant covering the bases of universities, medical centers, and think tanks – the settings for his Session University trilogy: From The Midst Of Wickedness, A Matter of Circumstance, and now All Mortal Greatness. His cadre of writing includes Danced By The Light Of The Moon, and Truth, Lies, And Deceit. Much of the credence of his gifts for creating characters and circumstances likely comes from direct observation!
A polished pro in sculpting fascinating characters, Cover brings to this third installment of his Sessions University series the cast of the initial episodes and defines them so well that the suspense and action surrounding the Sessions University and the developing Global University and foundation is immediately available to the reader. The primary characters – professor and now communications director and CEO of the foundation of topic is Thomas Simpson, described as ‘a walking mirror who presented himself to everyone as their own reflection’ and who is father to a gifted daughter and an Asperger’s son who soars above his ‘limitations,’ and has an wandering eye for beautiful women; Zoltan Vastag, his best friend who communicates with a strong Hungarian accent and an ‘on the edge of going berserk countenance’ and performs cancer research; and Mark Berger, the billionaire with his heavy Boston accent and varying physical appearance. The three men (influenced by an array of fascinating females) join in investigating international espionage and murder on the highest order, coming to unexpected decisions and rightful insights in the fallibility of the perpetrators on the scheme – as well as perceptions of themselves and each other. Spiked with wit and zest, the tale succeeds!
From cover to cover, this is the writing that is clearly the equal to such colleagues as John Grisham, James Patterson, Stephen King and Agatha Christie. Microscopic attention to detail, a keen sense of suspense, and sidebars of medical/university/criminology information make this a resounding success. Watch this author rise! Highly recommended.

Latest Five Star Review
From the Midst of Wickedness, book one in the Sessions University series, is a fast-paced, page-turner mystery/thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Academia and politics, two things that are hand in hand, is the backbone of the story and what a wild, amazing story it is! Mr. Cover does an excellent job weaving the two together. The reader can easily relate to the main character, Thomas Simpson, as he undercovers ... well, I don't want to give any spoilers away! I was very happy to discover there is a book two in the Sessions University series. Highly recommend!
