Jamie Kain grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and has since lived in too many places to count. She now calls Sacramento, California home, where she lives with her husband and three children.

The Good Sister is her debut young adult novel, and it was what you might call a labor of love, which is just a fancy way of saying it took a really long time to write and became something she was pretty obsessed with for a while. Stay tuned for details about her next young adult novel coming in 2015, Instructions for the End of the World.

It was both difficult at times and easy at times to write in three points of view. When writing the first draft, I enjoy shifting around a lot to different characters' perspectives, because it gives me a wider view of the story world. It also keeps things fresh and moving along when I'm not sure where one character's story is going. During revisions though, it was quite a challenge to make sure each sister's voice was uniquely hers and could be distinguished easily by the reader without sounding like I was trying too hard to make them unique. It was also very difficult to decide in which order the different characters' POV scenes should go--a bit like putting together a puzzle. Asha's point of view came most naturally to me--probably because of all the characters, she is the one I most identify with--while Sarah's was the most interesting to write and the one I'm happiest with in the end.(less)

I was inspired partly by the setting in which I lived at the time--the real version of the fictional town in which the story is set. I also wanted to write about the complexity of sister relationships, and once I put those two elements together the story came to life on its own.(less)

“Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.'
'John Lennon,' I say with a sigh. 'My mother is a huge fan.'
'So then you must know that every day, in every way, it's getting better.”
Jamie Kain, The Good Sister

“Memory is that trick by which we see the awful events of the past loom over the good, like mountains over mouse. We don't recall life as it was. Instead, we remember what was different, frightening, or strange, and we turn our lives into the fun-house mirror images of the truth.”
Jamie Kain, The Good Sister

“It's because in this vast world of unreliable people, he is the one I know I can rely on.”
