Corey Redekop's debut novel, Shelf Monkey — winner, Gold Medal for Popular Fiction, 2008 Independent Book Publisher Awards: a Top 40 Essential Canadian Novel of the Decade, CBC Canada Reads — is either a work of insane genius or an intolerable left-wing screed, depending on which review you read. Husk (ECW Press, 2012) was shortlisted for the 2013 ReLit Award and was named a Top Book of 2012 by editors of Amazon.ca. His short stories have found homes in anthologies such as The Exile Book of New Canadian Noir, Licence Expired: The Unauthorized James Bond, Superhero Universe: Tesseracts Nineteen, and Those Who Make Us: Creature, Myth and Monster Stories.

Stunningly handsome, supremely talented, superbly gifted at hyperbole, Corey

Apocalypse Whenever: Chill out. It's only the technological Singularity. 1 14 Nov 13, 2012 06:07PM
“Since every country stands in numerous and various relations with the other countries of the world, and many, our own among the number, exercise actual authority over some of these, a knowledge of the established rules of international morality is essential to the duty of every nation, and therefore of every person in it who helps to make up the nation, and whose voice and feeling form a part of what is called public opinion. Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject. It depends on the habit of attending to and looking into public transactions, and on the degree of information and solid judgment respecting them that exists in the community, whether the conduct of the nation as a nation, both within itself and towards others, shall be selfish, corrupt, and tyrannical, or rational and enlightened, just and noble.”
John Stewart Mill, Inaugural Address Delivered to the University of St Andrews, 2/1/1867

“And on the subject of burning books: I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles.

So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.”
Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
Stephen King

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
Jorge Luis Borges

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”
Cicero

crafty_puppy You've read a bazillion books I have never heard of. Hmmm. How many books do you read a week?
I read about 40 pages an hour, and only read about one novel a week, plus 2-4 nonfictions.
I liked how you rated your own book as 5 stars. That's adorable.

crafty_puppy The trivia questions are addicting! how many have you answered so far? don't you have other things to do besides answer trivia?! =) just kidding. I am procrasting writing a paper right now.

Kate Love that Vonnegut quote. And thanks for pointing me to Millet. I've added a bunch of her books to my to-read list.
