I was born November 13, 1960, and experienced all the kaleidoscope impressions of childhood, my Mother reading to me, acting out all the parts and me seeing the pictures in my head. When I was 5, I danced on the corner and made it rain. I’d discovered power. It was child’s play.

I soaked up the idealism of the times and read everything that came my way. At 13, I decided I wanted to be a writer. I wrote, usually copying the style of whatever I was reading. At 19, I burned all those journals and essays. I increased my reading and started to learn how to write. Starting slowly with slogans, then sentences, then poems, and finally paragraphs. I traveled, wanting to live the life of the writers I read about, New Orleans, Germany, Los Angeles, all

I think that my writing is trying to resolve that, to figure out the secret that every one else seems to know. So while I don't write mysteries in a traditional sense my writing is searching to solve a mystery in a much larger, existential sense.(less)

Couples that come to mind are Dick and Nicole Diver from "Tender is the Night", and this may sound facetious but the fisherman and the fish in "The Old Man and the Sea" but the 'couple' that first comes to mind is Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarity from Kerouac's "On The Road".

Sal and Dean are opposites and complement and contrast each other (as they're meant to be) while the relationship may not be totally equal, Sal seems enthralled to and by Dean. But Sal his purpose in the relationship too, he's hoping that Dean and his adventures will lead Sal to some sort of enlightenment, and I think that's what we're all seeking on this road of life, a moment of enlightenment that will make sense of all this to us.(less)

The Firefly Lantern Fires off the Imagination

I lived the first 23 years of my life in my imagination, but I bet with The Firefly Lantern Richard Holeman has me beat, he’s still living in his imagination and sending us back great notes. When I was in my teens I read about the adventure and magic of childhood from writers like Ray Bradbury and they were all set in the 20’s. I thought there was something about that time that made it a magical a Read more of this blog post »

“If you would like to know more about me look to the pages of my books and you'll find me in between the lines.”
Jim Cherry

“Isatai started chanting, drums pounding, the rhythm gathered and met the beat of their hearts, and that sound matched their thoughts. It was one sound they could hear, then they felt a deep pounding of hooves vibrating through their bodies. As they stared into the fire they saw the face of a great buffalo, its mane, flame. It grew in their eyes, engulfing them in its spirit, the vision raced through their hearts like an engine.”
Jim Cherry, The Captured Dead

“The night came on as swift and soft as a velvet dream. I was scrunched down in the front seat of my car in Neal's driveway trying to become part of the darkness.”
Jim Cherry, Becoming Angel

“...the nuclear family went critical...”
Jim Cherry, Becoming Angel

“I blew into L.A. streaking down the freeway, the song "L.A. Woman" blasting out of the car speakers, the wind in my hair, the music in the wind. The first thing you notice about L.A. is that it’s overflowing with people, tourists, the homeless, the starstruck, it was like an old fashioned boom town, a few ghosts wandered it’s streets but it was still booming, if L.A. lived off the people that were successful, the city would be awfully empty.”
Jim Cherry, The Last Stage

“Mackenzie, our profession courts death, madness is always just over the next rise, the next hillock…” Sherman’s voice dropped off, “I’m out in that landscape wavering between madness and sanity. Be careful Mackenzie you don’t cross over that rise and find yourself in the arid desert of madness … I fear it is this desert for me.”
