I would describe it as a bildungsroman, or an adult coming of age story, set in London’s nightshift world. Since setting plays an important role, it could be called urban fiction and, since the protagonist is searching for, and experimenting with, her identity, it could be seen as leaning towards categories of “psychological” and “dark”. At the same time I intended, partly with the crew of nightshift workers, for it to have some lightness too. (less)

“At its peak my obsession with her was like a form of self-harm: a private source of pain and comfort.”
Kiare Ladner, Nightshift

“What I liked best, though, was to take on the version of Sabine that I'd never seen: the person I imagined she was by herself, for herself, when she was alone. I noticed what I thought she'd notice, went where I thought she'd go. I reacted in the way I thought she'd react when nobody was watching.”
Kiare Ladner, Nightshift

“Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.”
Kiare Ladner, Nightshift
