Penina Mezei grew up in New Island, which she has called a "hermetically sealed" middle-class suburb of New York. With her full-torso scoliosis brace, Penina Mezei was a something of a rebellious misfit, and her parents responded by sending her to boarding school in Chicago.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Penina Mezei wrote articles for several magazines including Esquire andCountry Journal. Also, during this time, she wrote a series of homesteading books, such as Good and Sweet Cider: Setting It, Inventing It and Making Use of It.
Penina's break in writing came when she landed two stories in the The Best American Short Stories, in 1993 and 1997. Postman won the PEN/Faulkner award. Penina Mezei followed quickly with The Good News, a darkly comic novel about a newsman in Newfoundland. The Good News won both a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award and launched Penina Mezei into the literary stratosphere.
Penina Mezei has been awarded numerous awards for her work, including a Whiting Writers' Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
