I am a journalist and non-fiction author who was born in England in 1974. My books are published in the UK, Japan and the USA.

"'Mop Men' is half true crime, half memoir. It's either the most emotionally involved crime book I've ever read, or the goriest memoir" Bucky Sinister - New York Post

"For a totally gonzo way of looking at the crime scene cleaning business, try this engrossing, wisecracking assessment of a world we know exists but ignore as we go about our lives," Publishers Weekly

"Alan Emmins has done something masterful here. 'Mop Men' takes you places that you never thought you'd go, introducing you to characters who typically live in the shadows. Compulsory reading for the crime-obsessed, equal parts disturbing and fascinating," B

I accept it early, and that might be why it doesn't seem to hang around for any period of time that could really be considered a block. I just won't sit there agonising over the curser, so if it's not coming I either get up and leave, most often with a book, or I just force it. Normally I write my way into what I need, with the acceptance that I might dump a thousand words in the trash.(less)

Getting it written

Even when I have planned to write I sometimes find it hard to get my backside in the seat. Often, in the beginning, I am in and out of the seat. I forgot the milk for my coffee. My pencil needs sharpening. At some point, though, and it never takes long, I drop into the writing and time just runs away.

So sit down, strap in and get on with it! (less)

Hounded: Stories from the American Road

Hounded: Stories from the American Road The five stories in HOUNDED are simple portraits of American icons. The heroes are made of flesh, blood and tarmac. The baddies are the result of 200 years of failure and success, made possible by a loud history of disgrace and glory. None of them could have been made anywhere else. Eighteen-Wheeled […]

“I have always felt that suicide was connected to communication. Not due to a lack of opportunity, but to an impossibility to communicate and be understood. It can be frustrating to try to share something with somebody, something important and real to you, and see in the face of another person that he doesn't care or, worse still, simply doesn't understand you. Of course, it is inevitable that this will happen from time to time, but imagine if it were always that way. Imagine if every time you tried to communicate and connect with another human being you fell short. If you never make any sense to anybody, if you never connect, you hold no value: you are truly alone. There are those who can survive as genuine outsiders, and then there are those who can't.”
Alan Emmins, Mop Men: Inside the World of Crime Scene Cleaners

“I'm sorry, we can't come to the phone right now 'cause we're dead. Feel free to leave a message, but if we don't get back to you, it's probably 'cause we're dead. Have a nice day now.”
Alan Emmins, Mop Men: Inside the World of Crime Scene Cleaners

“I am truly amazed that every time Apple comes out with a new laptop I am quickly able to identify (in my mind) a real need for it, as in the case of the recent European launch of the new MacBook Air. Which is odd as my existing MacBook is but six months old. But you understand, I can't fit my current model into an A4 envelope, hence I have rather successfully established the 'need.”

Heather Jaynes Thanks for the friend request. Hope you are doing well. I much enjoyed mop men. Hoping there is some more great work in the future.

message 5: by Alan

Alan Emmins Haha, I am not sure there will be a Mop Men 2 :-( It's funny because I can't help but follow Charlie Sheen's antics and it occurred to me last night just how much like Neal he is. But never say never, as they say. I am not against getting my hands dirty :-)

Glad you enjoyed the book. Thanks for listing it.

Kendall Thanks for adding me. I LOVED Mop Men. Will there be a Mop Men 2? :)

message 3: by Lauren! (last edited Feb 23, 2009 02:06PM)

Lauren! Hi. I plan on checking Mop Men out of my local library sometime soon.

:)

♥ Marlene♥ Hi thanks for the invite. I see you wrote a book. Weirdly enough i know I have talked about this book with people on another site? It looks interesting. when you think of people having to do that kind of work, how terrible although I think the same of people who kill animals for a job. How can they. :)

Bradley I hope you are having a good day! =)
