My Latest Writing Project

Look, I have a problem. I find nearly everything fascinating. This creates a problem because I am a writer and so then I want to WRITE about everything I find fascinating. This probably explains why I was CNN Bureau Chief and national Geographic Explorer and why I've sold Hollywood screenplays, written and produced documentaries, scores of magazine articles, five non-fiction literary science books (everything from space exploration to human evolution and behavior, even science's quest to live forever). Most recently I wrote a sci-fi thriller, a novel set in the near future. We'll get to that another time.

This blog is about travel. I haven't blogged here for over 10 years and during the past four I began another project: my wife, Cyndy and I, are traveling all 7 continents, never by jet. We've covered over 125,000 miles across land and sea so far, two poles, six continents and 40 countries. Still a long way to go. I bring all of this up because in this blog I want to share something about the most recent leg of our journey -- the one that covered the Adriatic Sea/Dalmation Coast, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Crete, Egypt (700 miles up the Nile) and Jordan. (Next up: India.)

Anyhow, as the seasons shift from winter to spring, Cyndy and I found ourselves reminiscing about these extraordinary places, and I thought I'd share our top 10 photos of 2024 —each image a window into the beauty and history of these lands.

Rather than simply choosing my best shots, I wanted this collection to reflect the emotions these places evoked—the awe of standing before the ruins of an empire, the quiet reverence of drifting along the Nile at dusk, the vibrant energy of a bustling market. Whether you’ve walked these paths before or dream of doing so one day, I thought you might enjoy see a tiny sampling (we have so many).

This format doesn't allow me to show you the pictures here, but you can visit all ten with descriptions here:

From past to future - next up, more about my new novel Doppelganger- An Orphan, a Prodigy, a Murder. The audio version will soon be out!
