James R. Riffel is the author of the suspenseful Under False Pretenses, the story of a young woman caught in the clutches of a dying mob organization, without realizing how much trouble she is in.

Riffel is also the author of A Coach at Heart, a novel of football and family, and the humorous baseball short story The Trading Deadline.

Born in the San Francisco Bay Area and raised in Los Angeles, he attended San Diego State University. Outside of three summers spent in Palm Desert -- he measures the time there in summers instead of years, for obvious reasons -- he remained in San Diego County, where he lives with his wife and children.

Riffel is a longtime journalist who covers government, politics and courts in San Diego.
