It was interesting to revisit another book I read many years ago in high school. I did remember some of the passages, but certainly not all. There were no answers for me, but plenty of ideas to consider. Please read my entire review here: https://ope ...more |

What a most-depressing and grief-stricken book I have forced myself to read. Of course, I first read this novella many years ago, revisited it again a decade ago, and now I have engaged with it again as if it had never been read before. How strange t ...more | |

Devouring Time: Jim Harrison, a Writer's Life:
"This book is personal for me because Jim Harrison was one of my favorite writers for a long time. He identified as a poet, but became a prolific sports writer and master of the novella. One of the main influences on his life was the writer Thomas McG"

Though the book began sort of slowly for me I stayed with it because you just know Jim Harrison will drop a nugget or two along the way. And he did. Please read my entire review here: https://open.substack.com/pub/msarki/... ...more |

Nope. Was not aware of that. Sparling is a treat of a man. And he never let me know. Thanks Mike. Hope you are well. Up at my cabin in northern Michigan. Perfect weather up here.

I had also noticed your comments and your name as an author.
And I know that my question is an impossible to answer to, I wouldn't be able to do it myself, but it's one of the best ways of discovering unknown literary gems, like the one you've mentioned to me today. Thank you!

Thanks Nathan. I saw this yesterday and read it, most of it, and though I am glad smart people are talking about Gordon Lish I am not sure they are the right people. David Winters I know for sure is, but the others, not so. But then again, what do I know?

I totally agree. Hope goodreads gets it together. I would hate to see this "community" get dismantled.

All right. Thanks. I guess I get the gist of things. Some of the rules I do agree with as I do not think being demeaning or calling an author or reviewer names is very good. But an asshole is an asshole and I am troubled a bit if we can't even use that word anymore to describe say an author like David Shields, for example. His words on the page matter and they are clearly are written by and as an asshole in more than enough cases and that is a fact that needs to be pointed out. But that is just my opinion. Because he is a darling and a star in some circles is no reason to protect him. But perhaps big daddy amazon.com has something to do with all this?

See message 3, in particular (in the comments)... that should explain everything that's been going down in the last few days.

Ah, but that would ruin the question. See some of the latest comments in my update feed and you will figure it out. Or even a book I have reviewed just lately. They are both mentioned often in my work.

I have to be honest and tell you I never have read a story period about zombies or squirrel sex. But I am not judging.

Anyone setting up an account on the latest LibraryThing movement please add me as a friend. I have provided a link above for this to be quite easy for you. I would hate to end up out of the loop, so to speak.

You beat me to the ask as I was going to do the same with you. You are so smart and I like what you read.
