International Bestselling Author
@VampBard

Tagline 1: A kiss on the hand may be continental, but demons are a girls' best friend.
Tagline 2: Is love's truth something to be cherished or feared?

When Rita Hawthorne hikes to the Hollywood sign as she contemplates her future in film, she meets stunning and persuasive Leo Baph. As they look over the city after sunset, her wishes are kissed into the darkness and carried unto the demon’s ears.
Rita’s success happens overnight, and she credits Leo—her muse. They cohabitate happily for several years until Leo simply disappears one day. The only proof Rita has of his existence is a piece of parchment with some Latin words written on it—and a smudge of blood appearing on a line at the bottom.
As time marches on, Rita remains youthful and vibrant, starring in roles for much younger women. Until one day, she notices crow’s feet. She manages to throw herself into her work for several more years before she realizes her career is on the downswing—and she misses Leo.
Against her better judgment, a middle-aged Rita trudges up the foothills to the Hollywood sign once again. There, she wishes for Leo to return to her, staring over the city after sunset.
And he does—but he doesn’t look the way she remembered.
After learning of Leo’s true self, can Rita allow herself to love him?

Who is your favorite hero of fiction? My favorite fictional hero is still Wrath, from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. He’s a true leader, ya feel me? Really though, Beth is one lucky chick. I’d totally climb in his black satin sheets. I could probably put Roland Deschain, from Stephen King’s The Stand in this category, too.
What is your most treasured possession? My grandmother’s pearls. My mom’s diamond stud that I wear all the time. The quilt made from my mom’s T-shirts.
Which living person do you most admire? That’s a super hard question. I admire different people for different reasons. I admire my 6-12th grade band director for his dedication. I admire Liz Crowe for her tenacity. I admire Maddy James for her positive attitude.
What is your greatest fear? The progression of RA.
Who or what has been the greatest love of your life?Mr. VampBard is one of them. He ‘gets’ me and puts up with my yammering about characters and plots. I also have to say that Oldest, Middle, and Youngest are my heart and soul. Even though they’re grown.
What is your greatest regret? Not being able to spend more time with my kids. I worked too much when they were growing up. Being a teacher meant putting in tons of hours—and I worked in a foster care facility, so I didn’t have summers off.
If you could choose to be a character in a book, who would it be?Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia or Meg in A Wrinkle in Time. They were both brave and learned how to use their talents.
Which book have you read the most in your lifetime? The Great Gatsby. I’ve re-read it yearly since 1985. The dichotomy between the decadent opulence of the 1920s and Gatsby and Daisy’s lifestyles in sharp contrast to their happiness always chokes me up.
What is your favorite journey? The Hero’s Journey, of course. Joseph Campbell brilliantly narrated it.
What is your favorite quotation? Write drunk, edit sober. –Ernest Hemingway.
Dogs or Cats? Cats. I have three—two of them are black.
What do you most value in a friend? Space.
What quality do you most admire in a woman and/or a man? Honesty and compassion.
Which book that you’ve written is your favorite? Authors don’t have favorites—all their books are their children.
What are your writing quirks? I am a methodical planner—but my plans always go off the rails.
What do you do as a hobby?Knitting and I’m dabbling in digital graphics. Learning Photoshop is proving to be a challenge.
Which are your three favorite books? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle The Stand by Stephen King
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?Music or images. Sometimes, I’ll be listening to a song and an entire plot lands smack-dab in the middle of my brain. Other times, I’ll be perusing a stock photo site and a story smacks me upside the head.
What is your Writing Routine?Choose music. Re-read previous scene (without editing!). Read notes for the scene I need to write. Write the scene.
Does writing energize or exhaust you? It depends. Emotional scenes exhaust me. Most others energize me.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?I can write a novella in a week—first draft, around 30K words. The editing takes three or four days before I can safely send it off to my editor.
Do you have any Social Platform Links for your friends, fans, and readers? Reader Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/happi...
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?Depends on the book. Before starting Distilled, I researched bourbon-making for about a week. I decided what elements I wanted to include, roles different characters could have, and how I would create the world around those things. Sometimes, I’ll research as I’m writing. Like, Google Earth is a spectacular way to see a neighborhood for Contemporary.
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing? It turned me into a plotter. I used to think I could pants my way through any form of writing—after all, that’s how I did things in college and got As in my creative writing classes. But, when working on something like a novel, there’s too many balls in the air to not plan at least a little. Much different from writing short stories.
What were some of the challenges you faced on the road to publication?Having money to get things done. Cover art and editing are NOT cheap. I work a #dayjob as an editor for a literacy non-profit and that pays for my writing habit.
What are you working on now?I’m on a paranormal kick. I have started using my paranormal pen name, Marilyn Harlow, to keep the divide with retailers. But, Marilyn won’t have her own social media—it’s not a secret that Deelylah = Marilyn.
How did you come up with the idea for your book?I’ve always been a fan of Marilyn Monroe, and her movie, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” popped into my head while I was contemplating things for this book. I think it’s going to turn into a series.
What inspires you to write?I write every day. Sometimes, it’s a poem or song lyrics (with accompanying music) or it might be a chapter of a WIP. Maybe, if I’ve written a lot for work that day, I’ll create some other type of art.
How did you conduct your research for Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend? Hrm. This one is a toughy. I’ve had the concept for this book for a while. I’ve looked up images to inspire me, but haven’t had to do much research, overall.
What would your friends say is your best quality? I’m honest and creative. Those qualities have made for some interesting conversations.
Are reader reviews important to you? I read reviews and let them inform my writing moving forward. And, Amazon’s algorithms—Necessary evil of the business.
What do you do when you don’t write? I do some yarn work—either knitting or crocheting. I paint a bit. And, we have the never-ending home improvement project.
Tell us about your other books? I have a series—Teachers’ Lounge—that is about a fictional town in Michigan. The school has a ton of teachers, apparently, even though the town is pretty small. There is a historical/paranormal/zombie story, which is the origin story for the town. Most of the titles are contemporary, but a few are paranormal. I started writing this series on a dare from a former colleague (I’m a retired teacher—but I now work for a literacy non-profit). Distilled is a stand-alone, and it’s set in Liz Crow’s Love Brothers world. It’s about distilling bourbon. The main characters have issues, and there’s a crazy ex on the loose. What couldn’t you love? Manhattan Melody is the first title of the On Tour series. Three band members are rising stars, but we see their humble beginnings in Manhattan Melody. As well as Leo and Mia’s story. Leo is the bass player for the band and Mia is an adjunct college professor who bartends to make ends meet. Spark is the second title in the Mercy General series I co-write with Paige Prince. It’s about a firefighter who gets involved with the widow of a police officer—and her 5-year-old son. It’s a hard topic, but the end is TOTALLY worth it. A Howling Good Time is available in Romance Collections Guardian anthology. It’s a werewolf shifter romance, and they’re looking for the virus that causes the shift.
If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be? I have three kids and three step kids—I’m a modern-day Carol Brady—yet, I never had an Alice. I want my goddamn Alice!
Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers? Don’t overthink it. Sit your butt in the chair and write. You can plot or you can pants—or a combination of the two—but don’t put it off. I believe everyone has a story to tell.
Oh, and get a good editor. They make all the difference.
What are your Top Writing Tips?1. Have a good editor.2. Make sure your covers look professional. 3. Have a plan.
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand? On my side table, there’s an alarm clock, my cell phone, and my watch. Maybe a stray hairclip I forgot to take out before my head hit the pillow.

Deelylah is the empty-nesting author of contemporary romance.

Khardine Gray
USA Today Bestselling Author
@khardinegray1

Tagline 1: The Demons and devils threatened to take everything and rip their world apart.
Tagline 2: I shouldn’t want him, we want different things . I’ve always known I should stay away from the alpha wolf. But when the demons and devils unless their evil it’s 0nly us who can stop them from tearing everything apart.

He was a werewolf…
There, that should have been reason enough to keep me away.
Witches from the Coven of Shadows and werewolves do not mix.
Even before it was forbidden, they didn’t do it.
But… that never stopped me from wanting him the alpha wolf.
Attraction brought us together, but the demons and devils may drive us apart.
A war is coming, we both know it.
If he plays by his own rules, I’ll be alone in the dark…

I looked around the room and my spirits fell.
That was the best words I could find to describe how I felt.
I knew this would happen. After Father’s betrayal, it was a wonder how anyone was here at all.
This was the first Realm’s Council meeting since we found out who and what he was.
This was the state of us four months later. A shadow of what we’d previously been.
A meeting hall that was once full of magical and mystical beings from every realm known to man and creature was now less than half. I’d counted a total of sixteen people present, and that included me. The room was designed to hold sixty people. We had a long table that seated each and every one of them. All representatives from the mystical and magical community who’d trusted us as the Ravenwood family to be their leaders.
Us who were high witches from the Coven of Shadows. The oldest witching coven that had been around since the dawn of time.
Bad enough that we were already rare with the few numbers we had since you belonged to the coven by birthright but add this debacle to it and I would say it was a sign of serious change.
When people no longer trusted you to lead that was a big problem. Never mind the fact that it wasn’t you who dealt the damage. It was sufficient that the same blood flowed through my veins.
It was all however, problems I would have to deal with because it would be me taking over from Father. Not my mother as I assumed.
That was what she wanted to tell everyone today.
Everyone which included my sisters: Juliana and Gabrielle, The three vampires from the Order of Raphael- Tristan my soon to be brother in law and his brothers, Ivan and Virgil, and ten others. The ten were a mixture of fae folk. The weaker beings who’d always looked to us for protection over the centuries.
It was a given that they’d always follow us, and I got the feeling that the Order of Raphael were only here because of Tristan. Ivan was leader but Tristan had a strong influence over them. They were brothers and much like my sisters they’d support me.
Mother stood and looked around the room. We’d given time for lateness and waited for half an hour already just waiting to see who would be coming.
She looked to me and I nodded. Yes, better to start than piss off the people who were already here . It would be disrespectful.
She waved her hand and the large oakwood doors closed at her will. With them my heart crumbled.
No point looking out for anyone else. This was it.
It was just that there was one person I’d always looked out for and it crushed me to see he really wasn’t coming.
Lucian Feynnoir.
Lucian the leader of the lycans and werewolves.
We used lycans and werewolves interchangeable here no matter you were who was born with the lycanthropic abilities and or a human who’d been bitten and changes with the moon. They all answered to him as their leader regardless of whichever pack they traveled in or what part of the world or realm they came from.
It was him. His absence meant they were no longer with us.
It also meant he truly didn’t care about me.
He never did. I was a witch and he was a werewolf. Why would he?
Even if I thought he did, I was totally wrong. If I wasn’t then I would have seen him after Father’s betrayal and he would be here now.

Why do I write?
Writing is my passion. I’ve never gone a day without writing. I love creating characters with their own wonderful stories.
What genre does your work fall in?
I write contemporary, paranormal, and interracial romance.
Why did you chose that genre?
I love love and writing about people falling in love and the adventures they go on.
How does your work contribute to that genre?
I write with a creative passion that evokes the essence of romance. I take my time to ensure my pages leap out at you with the story as you read my work.
What would the title of your life story be?
The Girl who did everything and never stopped trying.
Besides writing do you have any other creative passions?
I love ice skating and dancing.

Her books have sexy, drool-worthy heroes who will make you melt, and sassy, fun loving, ambitious heroines.
She simply adores her readers and loves spoiling them.

Working as a veterinarian for an animal rescue shelter has given Harper a heart for abused strays. So when a mysterious, sexy man shows up at the clinic looking for someone to tend to his wounds, Harper is there to assist. The man calls himself Bishop, and he says he’s on the run from a demon named Barbas who has made him its slave. It’s a hard story to swallow, yet Harper can’t deny that Bishop is surrounded by magic, and that his supernatural allure is impossible to resist.
She’s all set for a steamy one-night stand, but then Barbas makes Harper his target and things get personal. Now, she’s willing to help Bishop take revenge on the demon who’s destroyed their lives. And if she falls in love in the process, that’s even better. After all, what can go wrong when you give away your heart to someone who’s been living in hell for the past twenty years?

Chapter OneHarper stood in line at the roadside market with a Diet Coke, two apples, and four boxes of dog cookies. Today was her day to visit the Ravenstock animal shelter, and she wasn’t going to arrive without treats for her patients. Only three people stood ahead of her, but the line crawled along. The clerk, an older man with a white, bushy beard, chatted to every customer while ringing them up. Harper forced herself to keep from tapping her foot. Now that she’d moved to the country, she had to accept things moved slower than they had in the city.
The bell over the door rang and a man in a long, black coat swept in on a gust of wind and rain. His dark hair had been cropped brutally short, and he had several piercings in his left ear. Harper lowered her gaze, not wanting to catch his eye. He wasn’t a large man, but an aura of danger enveloped him. His shoulders were tense, and his lower jaw was clenched. Harper had occasionally seen his type in Detroit, but he looked out of place here in northern Michigan.
As the line inched forward, Harper sensed the man in the long coat prowling around the store. She tensed, certain he was about to rob the place. However, no one else seemed concerned. The clerk laughed at something one of the customers said, and the woman in front of Harper kept her eyes on her phone.
The man in the coat stepped in line behind Harper. He carried one of the red, plastic shopping baskets over one arm. In it was a loaf of bread and a half-gallon of milk along with a package of sandwich meat. Certainly nothing dangerous. Harper let out a sigh of relief.
The problem wasn’t the man, she realized. It was Greg, her ex. Greg had been stalking her ever since she’d left him three months before. At first, he’d sent her texts demanding to know why she’d gone. Then he’d started forwarding candid pictures of her at work and the gym to let her know that he was always watching. His latest messages had been downright threatening. You better stop ignoring me, or you’ll be sorry. When he left a dead cat on her doorstep, it was time for her to leave town. Now, even though she was three-hundred miles from Detroit, she still looked over her shoulder.
“That’s a lot of dog biscuits,” the man behind her said.
To prove to herself she wasn’t afraid, Harper looked directly at him and smiled. “I have a lot of dogs.”
“Animal hoarder?” he said.
“Veterinarian.” She nodded toward the door. “I volunteer at the Ravenstock animal shelter.”
He broke into a smile, softening the hard angles of his face. “You like helping strays. Good for you.”
Harper was about to reply when the clerk cleared his throat. “I guess I’m next,” Harper said and placed her purchases on the counter.
As she left the store, the wind whipped at her hair and blew rain into her face. Although it was the beginning of May, spring hadn’t yet arrived this far north. Harper loved the quiet of the country, but this cold weather had to go! She hurried toward her car.
“Harper.” A long-haired, heavy-set man in a bulky coat leaned against her car. Greg.
Harper gasped and almost dropped her groceries. “How did you find me?” she demanded. Because Greg was a private investigator, she’d been very careful when she’d moved, not even telling friends and family where she was going. She’d cut up her old credit cards so they couldn’t be traced back to her, and had changed her phone number. She’d done everything right, yet here he stood.
“You can’t get away from me.” He stood straighter and came toward her, forcing her back a step. “You should know that by now.” He smiled when he said this, but the threat was all too clear.
“Leave me alone!” If she was loud enough, maybe she could attract attention from someone inside the store. She fumbled for the can of mace hidden deep within her purse. “Go away, or I’ll….”
She cut herself off, but Greg picked up on her threat. “You’ll what?” he jeered. “Call the cops?” His smile was cruel and cunning. “I’m sure they’d be interested in hearing my side of the story, too.”
Harper knew she was trapped. If the police did come, she’d be in as much trouble as Greg. “Leave me alone,” she said, this time begging. Her hand went to the scar above her left eyebrow. Greg had hurt her before; he would surely do it again.
Greg shook his head. “No can do. You, however, will get into my car if you know what’s good for you.”
She retreated another step. Suddenly, the safety of the market seemed leagues away. “Greg, please… .”
“Greg, please… .” he said, parodying her.
Harper felt a presence behind her. “Leave her alone.”
Greg’s sneer became a snarl. “Who are you?”
The man from the store stepped in-between Harper and Greg. “I’m someone who wants to talk sense into you.”
The man sounded calm and assured, almost friendly, but Harper wasn’t fooled. Tension thrummed throughout his body. She had the feeling he was sizing up Greg and looking for weaknesses.
Greg stuck out his chin. “Get lost. This is between Harper and me.”
The man held up both hands to show he wasn’t a threat. “Let’s be reasonable and talk this out.”
“Real men don’t talk,” Greg said and reached under his jacket.
“He’s got a gun!” Harper shouted, but her warning came too late. The gun went off, and Harper shrieked.
“You stupid son-of-a-bitch,” the man growled the words. In the yellow light of the parking lot lamp, the man’s coat darkened at the shoulder as blood flowed from the wound.
Harper dropped her groceries and ran to her rescuer’s side. “Oh my God! Greg, you idiot!”
“He made me do it,” Greg said. “It wasn’t my fault!”
The man leaned against Harper’s Jeep, his hand clamped over the wound. Even in the dim light, Harper noticed the pale look of shock.
The gunshot had drawn attention from those inside the store. Shouts rang out and someone peered around the doorway. No doubt, at least one person had called 911 which meant the sheriff would arrive any minute.
The scrabble of tennis shoes against gravel let Harper know Greg was fleeing the scene. He leapt into his car and sped off so fast his car fishtailed on the road, making his tires squeal against the asphalt.
Harper had been terrified moments before, but now she was furious. How dare Greg come after her like this! And how dare he shoot her rescuer! Hopefully, someone would call the police. Even if it meant she got into trouble as well, she couldn’t let Greg get away with it.
She hurried back to where her rescuer leaned against her Jeep. “We need to get you to a hospital.”
He shrugged off his coat and examined his arm. “It’s nothing more than a scratch.”
“Doesn’t matter. It’s a gunshot wound, and it needs to be looked at.”
“You’re a doctor,” he said. “Can’t you do something?”
“I’m a vet,” she corrected, “and I could lose my license if I practice medicine on people. But don’t worry. I’ll call an ambulance.”
He shook his head. “I can’t have the authorities involved.”
“This isn’t a debate,” she said.
“You said you were heading to Ravenstock, right? Take me there and clean the wound. Once I know you’re safe, I’ll be on my way. Then, you can speak with the police.”
Harper’s stomach was in knots. She owed him a debt of gratitude, but the man threw off warning signals like police flashers at a four-car collision. He had a desperate, dangerous feeling about him. As if someone hunted him. And the last thing she needed in her life was another loose cannon.
Seeing her hesitation, the man shrugged. “Look, it’s okay. I know this looks sketchy as hell.”
He was right; it did look sketchy as hell. “Are you running from the cops?” she asked. “Are you wanted? Is the mob after you?”
He laughed. “I’m wanted, but not by the mob.” He picked up the bag of groceries she’d dropped and handed them over. “Don’t worry about it. I don’t want to get you into trouble.” He turned to go.
Ah, Hell. She couldn’t turn her back on someone who had just rescued her from Greg, the maniac. “Get in the Jeep. “Ravenstock is only a mile up the road.” She never could resist helping a stray.

What is your most treasured possession?
I have to admit that it’s my phone. I grew up pre-computer, yet I’m still a techie! I love that I can read books, store and take pictures, and listen to music all on one device. I really marvel at technology and am always eager to see what they come up with next.
Who or what has been the greatest love of your life?
Definitely my husband. We’ve been married for over thirty years, and I knew from the beginning that he was the one I was meant to be with. He’s my cheerleader, my life coach, and my best friend.
Dogs or Cats?
I would have to say both! I love how dogs can be so enthusiastic. They’re active and rough-and-tumble not to mention loyal. Cats, on the other hand, (or at least my cat) can be a little finnicky, but I love to sit in a chair, reading a book, with a cat curled up in my lap.
What quality do you most admire in a woman and/or a man?
Generosity. I admire people who donate their time, as well as their money, to worthy causes. I also love it when people tip well.
What are your writing quirks?
I am a thirsty writer! I always have a glass of iced tea or a cup of coffee when I write. I try not to snack, but I figure drinking is okay.
What do you do as a hobby?
I love to knit and crochet. If I don’t have a book in my hands, then I will have a pair of needles or a hook. I also love exploring new music. I’m a big fan of indie bands.
Which are your three favorite books?
The Stand by Stephen King; Jane Eyre; and Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
What is your Writing Routine? I always write first thing in the morning and last thing before I stop working for the day. My ideas are always freshest in the morning, and writing actually relaxes me at night.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Both! It can be draining, especially if I am really into a scene, but it can also perk me up.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on the third book in my Restless Spirits series. Restless Spirits is about a young man who can see ghosts, but has always hated his ability. Throughout the series, he comes to terms with his special gift while helping put ghosts to rest.
More Favorites from the Restless Spirits series: I am in love with my characters! Ethan, the main character, struggles with his visions because, all his life, he was told that he was mentally ill and not clairvoyant. His boyfriend, David, struggles with his identity as a gay man. Ethan’s friend and business partner, Christian, is more easy going. He recently lost someone he cared deeply about, but that loss has encouraged him to move take more risks in life. He and Ethan have started a paranormal investigation business, and have gone on many adventures.
Tell us about your other books?
I write a lot of different kinds of books. I’ve written cozies in my Straight to Hell series and straight-up romance in Just the Two of Us. Mostly, I enjoy books with an otherworldly element. Straight to Hell is urban fantasy whereas Restless Spirits is more supernatural thriller. What are your Top Writing Tips?
Write every day. Don’t be afraid to write a terrible first draft, lol. Read, read, and read some more. Always appreciate your readers. Connect with other writers. Never give up!
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand?
Right now, I’m in the middle of three books. The first is for my book club, and it’s called There There by Tommy Orange. The next is a thriller called Cut and Run by Mary Burton. The final one is a favorite classic of mine – The Wasteland by T.S. Elliot.

Tagline 1: Losing isn’t an option, but Nina doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning.
Tagline 2: Bargain with the devil and you pay the highest price!

The military gave Nina Volkova everything she required in life, the freedom to kill the creatures that slaughtered her parents and an income to raise her little sister. However, when her sister gets sick, Nina realizes she needs more, and can only turn to the one place she doesn’t wish to go, the Oculus Tears Tournament. Losing isn’t an option, but she doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning.
Hex is reigning champion of the paranormal death games, Oculus Tears. He’s undefeated against every paranormal creature that had the guts to step into the ring with him. When the human femme fatale enters his arena, he’s not threatened by her bluster, but he is entertained by her snarky attitude. He also knows her secret.
Will he reveal it to the others—putting an even bigger target on her back? Or will she have to make a bargain with the devil and pay the ultimate price?

Today is a great day to die. “It’s a better day to kick some supernatural ass,” Nina muttered to herself as she surveyed the abandoned asylum in Shine, Alabama. She imagined the cracked and broken windows represented the eyes and mouth of the souls that remained trapped within those haunted walls. The crumbling mortar reflected the broken minds of those the staff terrorized. The vines inched along the brick as if in an attempt to hide the past or escape the cruel events that avoided penance for the crimes the staff committed. It came as no surprise that a demon that hosted Oculus Tears resided on this ominous land. The rundown sanitorium was the perfect setting for Mizeth’s sinister games. Only Hell would’ve served as a better location. Thankfully Mizeth won’t recognize me. Dismissing the memory of their first meeting, she focused on the present. The city of Shine dried up along with the psychiatric hospital six decades ago. A scandal involving the sufferings and unapproved experiments that occurred within the walls rocked the community. The revelation of the misdeeds conducted turned it into a ghost town. Humans no longer lived inside the city limits. The tournament was legendary, a rumor the government knew about but couldn’t prove existed. Its secretive location was the only reason the government hadn’t leveled it.Oculus Tears.A rumor to the government.A myth to the paranormal populace.A game that granted dark wishes to those brave enough to risk everything.Only the ghosts of the past hid Oculus Tears from the population. In a different life, she’d reveal the location to her employer so they could destroy the monsters within the town. Not that the covert black ops military team she worked with could protect humans from all occult elements. They gave it their best efforts, but still continued to fail. One dead monster is better than none. That had to pass for some sort of headway in the war against the arcane.Thinking of her squad, Nina sighed. What would her team think when they realized she’d gone AWOL? Left without a goodbye or an eye on their six.Her treasonous defection was a one-way ticket to getting lost in an off-the-books black site.Stomach rolling with a sour mix of regret and no other choice, Nina hesitated to approach the asylum. There remained time to change her mind. She could follow through with her plan to save her sister or she could give up and report back to her team. I’m here. Doesn’t that already imply I made a decision to betray my country? Analyzing the macabre history and the irony of the Oculus Tears setting sufficed as nothing more than stalling tactics. No one but Nina could save her baby sister now. Neither could anyone alleviate her guilt for turning her back on her crew—her adopted family.Nina opened and closed her hands as she surveyed the area for guards. She double checked her weapon inventory and patted at her clothing. The imprint of steel assured her the guns, knives, and other weapons remained concealed and in place. The chances of her making it out of the abandoned building alive were slim to none. “I’ve faced worse odds.”Beirut two months ago. That’d been a shit-storm of a zombie infestation.Twenty from D.A.M.N. Squad 12 died and reanimated, adding to the infestation. Brushing aside the memory, she took the first step from her safe position among the dense brush and strode to the right of the building. With each step, her determination, if not her confidence, increased. Her well-oiled combat boots made no noise as she walked toward the structure with her hands up. ‘Shot on sight,’ would be a terrible tombstone commemoration.Shaking aside the grim thought, she halted when the flash of a lens coming from the roof blinded her for a second. A male emerged from the shadows near the asylum with a gun in his hand and a red laser tagging her chest.“I’m here to participate in Oculus Tears.”

What is your most treasured possession?
Aside from my family, I have the American Flag that draped over my grandfather’s casket. He served in WWII and I have it proudly displayed in my office. The artwork my children have made over the years are my other most treasured possessions, and they are also displayed in my office.
What is your greatest fear?
Losing my children. I can’t even hardly think about it without my stomach going queasy.
Who or what has been the greatest love of your life?
My husband, Mark. We’ve been together for over 30 years and married for 28.
What is your greatest regret?
The way I’ve treated a few people in my life, but I’ve apologized and made up with all of them.
If you could choose to be a character in a book, who would it be?
Mack/Kella from my book Lie to Me. I don’t think I’d have been as strong and courageous as she was.
Which book have you read the most in your lifetime?
As an adult, Fires of Winter by Johanna Lindsey. As a kid, the Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner was my favorite. I checked it out of the library countless times, until they wouldn’t allow me to check it out again without reading something else first.
What is your favorite journey?
It would have to be a toss-up between writing or being a mother. Dogs or Cats?
Dogs. I have 3 of them. All of my cats have been Satan’s minions.
What quality do you most admire in a woman and/or a man?
Confidence with who you are regardless of society’s expectations.
Which book that you’ve written is your favorite?
Lie to Me is probably my favorite book because I wrote it in less than a month. I knew the characters inside and out from the first line. That was a first for me. Finding Her Fire would be my second favorite because I had the same experience with it as I did with Lie to Me.
What are your writing quirks?
I have crystals I hold to clear my mind prior to beginning my writing for the day.
What do you do as a hobby?
Write. LOL Yeah, it’s my job, but I love it. Other than that, my hobbies would be hanging out with my husband and kids. My family is everything to me.
I love it when I get a story from my dreams. That’s where Hex came from.
What is your Writing Routine?
I write from 9-5 each day.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Energize! My youngest son can tell if I’ve written or not that day. If I’m peppy, he’ll say, “Must’ve been a good writing day.”
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Depends on how stubborn the book is. Lie to Me is over 100,000 words and I wrote it in 3 weeks. I have books that are 40,000 and they took me a month to write. It just depends on the how loudly the characters are talking and how much family drama is going on in my life.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I like to create my own worlds and rules. Seldom do I go by the rules of the real world. What’s the point in writing if I have to follow reality? Writing and reading is all about escaping real world problems.
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
It made me more focused and committed to writing because someone took me seriously. Before that, family treated me like the butt of a joke. You know, “She’s a ‘writer’ but not good enough to be published,” kind of joke. I had very little support until I received my first publishing contract.
What are you working on now?
Hex and Nina for the anthology. Then I’ll write on my next siren song series book.
How did you come up with the idea for your book?
Hex came to me in a dream. Or rather, I should say Nina was the star of my dream. She was badass and I love strong heroines who take no shit.
What inspires you to write?
My sanity. LOL Writing is my drug. Without it, I get moody and depressed. So it’s the best drug out there for me because it keeps my mood stabilized.
What are your Top Writing Tips?
Write, write, write. Don’t stop because others might not believe in you. Write even when it’s hard. Write when you love it. Write when you hate it. Write when only you believe in yourself. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. Stay focused and push aside any negativity. Your dreams are as important as the others around you. At the end of all that, get a good editor because not all editors are created equally.
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand?
LOL Vibrators and other sex toys. What? You asked! ;-)

Tagline 1: Cecily’s beloved twin, Calder, did not die in a car accident. If it’s her last act in life, she’ll uncover the truth. And someone will pay.
Tagline 2: Cecily is all alone in the world now that her beloved twin, Calder, died. The family that raised her knows how he died, and it wasn’t in a car accident. With her last breath, she’ll uncover the truth, and someone will pay.

When twins Cecily and Calder Sizemore’s parents are killed in a car accident they are taken in by Gus and Mae Frost. Raised like family by the Frosts, Cecily’s feelings for their son, Marcel, evolve into anything but sisterly as the years pass.
Cecily always knew something was amiss in the Frost household. Little things belied the calm, peaceful ambiance Mae did her best to portray. Calder tried to warn her things were not as they appeared, but she didn’t want to believe him. But when Calder begs her to leave Des Moines, start a new life away from the secrets, away from the Frosts and away from Marcel, she follows his advice and shatters her heart in the process.
Now she’s been called home for her beloved brother's funeral. There's more to the story than meets the eye. Discrepancies in how Calder died lead her to believe it wasn’t a car accident. And she's not returning to Minnesota until she uncovers the truth.
She’ll have to face Marcel again—the boy who stole her heart when she was eight, the man whose very presence turns her blood to liquid fire, and the man who walks the earth as if he owns every piece of it. He’s always played his cards close to his chest, but this time, he’s underestimated her dogged tenacity. She’ll find out what really happened to Calder, even if it’s her last act in life.

Chapter One
"We therefore commit Calder Sizemore's body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust...."
The cloying scents of damp earth and white lilies spiraled up Cecily's nose. Overhead, a pitiless sun bore down on the mourners gathered around her brother's casket—familiar faces she’d known forever, lived with and loved. She fought back the bile rising in her throat and prayed the minister would come to the end of the service before her knees buckled.
To her left, stood Mae Frost, her mother's best friend and the woman who had raised her and Calder after their parents died. As if Mae could read her thoughts, the woman squeezed her hand, an unspoken sign of moral support and unconditional love. She would expect nothing less from Mae, and had received nothing less for the past twenty years. If Mae's husband, Gus, were here, she would receive the same outpouring of love from him. In essence, Gus was in attendance, not above the ground but below. And now Calder would rest beside the man through all eternity.
"And so, shall we ever be with the Lord."
Dear God, when will he say 'Amen?
She stared at the burgundy coffin with its hideous spray of red roses, yellow lilies and white orchids while a thousand questions tore through her brain. How could she go on without Calder, the other half of her soul, her womb mate, the one person who had always been there through the highs and lows of her life? What was he doing in St. Louis when he died and who was with him at the end? She had to know what kind of accident had taken his life.
That's the word Mae used—accident—when she called her in Minnesota to deliver the dreadful news. 'We've booked a morning flight to Des Moines,' she'd said. 'The ticket is in your name and waiting for you at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, Delta Airlines ticket counter.' Numb with shock and grief, Cecily had pressed Mae for details but the woman circumvented her question. Why should she be surprised? The entire Frost family held Masters’ Degrees when it came to dodging and ducking topics they didn’t wish to discuss. ‘We’ll be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive,” she’d said and then ended their conversation.
Zombie-like, Cecily had packed her luggage and drove through the night from Gull’s Landing— the picturesque resort town where she lived—to the Minneapolis airport. During the three-hour drive, she'd saturated an entire box of Kleenex with a gazillion tears and relived every precious moment of her and Calder’s childhoods—the death of their parents, the extravagant Christmases after the Frosts took them in, the luxurious summer vacations, but most of all, the cross-your-heart-hope-to-die secrets no one but twins would share.
Her gaze wandered from the casket to the pallbearers standing opposite her— Chad and Will, friends from high school, Travis and Chris, college buddies, and, of course, Elliott and Marcel Frost, Mae and Gus' sons. And the boys she and Calder had shared a home with most of their lives. The brothers stood over six-feet tall now with broad shoulders and rock-hard bodies. Gym-rats Mae called them. Anyone with sight could see they were no longer boys, but hot-blooded, virile males most men envied and every woman on God’s peachy earth drooled over.
Her pseudo-brothers shared the same grey eyes and midnight hair, but there the similarities ended. Elliott, two years younger than Marcel, was leaner than his brother and kept his dark hair short and neatly trimmed. He looked more like Mae with his oval face, round, inquisitive eyes and soft, full lips.
Marcel was the mirror image of his father, Gus, in the man's younger days. Marcel's hair, gleaming now beneath the hot rays of sun, fell in a wild tumble of ebony waves to his white shirt collar. His features were sharp, all angles and planes, from the high cheekbones to the straight nose, to the strong jaw with a cleft smack dab in the middle. Cecily's gaze lingered on his mouth…that wicked, wicked mouth she'd kissed so many times and had tried so hard to forget.
Their eyes met and held. His reminded her of a storm-tossed sea, dark and turbulent. He couldn't look into hers right now, thank God. The sunglasses she'd donned this morning—after crying all night— hid the red rims and the swollen lids that made her cousin to a puffer fish.
She looked away from Marcel when a veil of pain descended on his beautiful face. She couldn't deal with his anguish and hers right now. Nor could she trust him, had never wholly trusted him. The man harbored secrets, deep, dark secrets only a select few were privy to, and she and Calder were not among the privileged.
Marcel must have thought her dimwitted not to notice the late-night trips, some that lasted for days. Did he think she hadn't noticed the cuts, scrapes and bruises on his sculpted body when he joined her in bed? For a long time, she thought he belonged to an underground fight club, but why would he hide that from her? No, she'd concluded long ago; he didn't spend his days and nights in a boxing ring. Locked rooms in the house, covert phone calls and whispered conversations had nothing to do with boxing.
Elliott was involved, of that she was certain, but what about Calder? Surely, he would have told her, boasted about solving the mystery of the locked doors, the secretive getaways and low-voiced discussions. She had remained close with her brother, albeit by phone, after she moved to Minnesota two years ago, and yet…a niggling sense of unease washed over her thinking back on their conversations now.
When she asked Calder about his life, why did he gloss over details, filling their conversations with meaningless tidbits of banal activity? 'I picked up my dry cleaning today', he would say. Or, 'I washed the car and hit the gym tonight.' When she pressed her brother about work or his recent love life, he slithered around her questions with vague responses. He’d become just like the Frosts in this regard. “There's nothing too exciting about driving limos, and as for my love life, I'm not ready for a white picket fence in the burbs.'
Her heart cried out for answers. She had the distinct feeling Calder's death and the Frost brothers' secrets were connected. Her hope fell like sails caught up in a squall if she thought to get those answers from Marcel. She had a better chance of winning the lottery. He'd always held his cards close to his chest, walled his emotions from the outside world. It would take a great deal of cunning and perseverance on her part to get to the truth. If he thought to put her off again, shoo her back to Minnesota without as much as plausible explanation, he was wrong…dead wrong. She wouldn't run this time, not until she found out the truth about how and why Calder had died.
The minister's voice broke into her dismal thoughts. "And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Amen."
With heads bowed, their hands still clasped together, the mourners dispersed. Elliott still stood beside Marcel and visibly winced when his brother reached out and touched the coffin for the last time. Cecily’s heart fractured for the thousandth time that day.
"Come along, dear," Mae said, still clutching her hand. "Everyone will be at the house soon for refreshments."
"You go ahead, Mae. I'll meet you at the car in a moment."
Elliott's eyes darted left to right and Marcel lifted his head when she stepped forward and spoke. "What was Calder doing in St. Louis?"
Elliott lowered his voice. "Why don't we talk about this later?"
Her answer came hard and fast. "No, let's talk about it now."
Elliott put his hand on his brother's shoulder. "I'll wait in the car for you, bro."
She waited until his footsteps faded before she pinned Marcel with a lethal glare. Too bad he couldn't see it behind her shades. "Enlighten me, Marcel."
"It was just a weekend get-away." He ran his hands through the hair at his forehead. "St. Louis hosts several fourth of July celebrations every year, Riverfest, Fair St. Louis…." His voice dwindled on a heavy sigh.
Lord help her, could she even say the words? "What happened, how did Calder die?"
"Car accident." He blew air through his lips. "Calder made a late-night beer run and…and…the sheriff said he spied tracks from a deer sprinting at top speed across the dirt road. Calder must have swerved to avoid the animal and hit a tree."
"Was he alone in the car?"
Marcel gave a slow nod, but the flicker in his eyes contradicted the head motion. He must not know she'd memorized his body language and every nuance eons ago. A tug at the corner of his mouth meant he was happy, a tic in his jaw, irritated. But truth and lies walk a thin line and both resided behind those luminous orbs at the moment.
"Who made the decision to seal the casket before I arrived?"
"Me. I didn't want to put you through…wanted you to remember him in life. Both Mom and the coroner concurred."
She blew a huff or air. "Yeah? Well, you, Mae and the coroner are not his next of kin."
Anger laced his words. "I did it for you, Cecily."
This time, his eyes didn't lie. "So, who identified—?"
"Me." His face blighted by pain, his voice guttered like a candle flame. "I identified him for the mortuary in St. Louis, before they shipped his body home.” The seconds ticked by while he held her stare. At last, he spoke. "You got something to say, Cecily, say it."
Every bone in her body ached, not like when she had the flu, but rather a dull pain in the deepest part of her marrow. If she lived to be one hundred, she'd never get used to the aberrant discomfort that took flight in her bones when something in her world was off. "I do have something to say. Call it intuition, but something reeks here."
Palms up, Marcel’s hands came out at his sides. Translation—a defiant stance that meant she was getting under his skin. "Look, I don't know what your internal truth compass is pointing to, but it's like I said. Now, why don't you run back to your cozy little life of tea leaves and tarot cards in that quaint little resort town you live in and get on with your perfect little life with your perfect little boyfriend?"
How the hell does he know about Leif? Mae, of course. Mae must tell him everything. "You'd like that, for me to just go away, wouldn't you? Not this time, Marcel, not when every short hair on my arms and at the nape of my neck is standing at attention, not when my gut roils in protest at the words coming out of your mouth. Twins know things about one another, things others can't possibly understand because they've never known such a bond. My soul would be at peace if I thought Calder died from a freak accident." She lifted her chin. "So, tell me, why is it so restless?"
Resignation laced his words. "I don't know what your soul thinks any more than I know what your heart thinks. I'm pretty sure we established that when you left for Minnesota, you know; when you walked away from me without as much as a backward glance."
His words stung because he spoke the truth. She had run, away from him, away from everything they once shared, but now she was back and she wouldn't leave until she knew the truth about Calder—knew the truth about Marcel and Elliott. "I'm not running this time, not until I know what happened to my brother. I don't care how long it takes or what I have to go through to get the truth." She pivoted on her heels, speaking over her shoulder, "Get used to seeing me around, Marcel."

A dozen cars lined the large circular driveway when Cecily and Mae arrived at her childhood home. The limo came to a halt and Cecily prayed to the ceiling. It’s almost over. Please help me hold it together. The driver opened her door. She stepped out, scanned the old Victorian and a montage of memories flooded her brain.
A different cemetery, another time. A throng of people dressed in black surrounded her parents’ graves. Snowflakes fell from the sky causing her to shiver. She gripped Calder’s hand tighter and asked where they would live now. He pointed to a tall man with wide shoulders and a kind face. The woman standing beside him was adorned in black, hat, dress, even the long veil covering her face. Two boys with dark hair, not much older than her and Calder, fidgeted beside the man and woman.
When the service ended, the adults walked over to them. He spoke first. ‘My name is Gus and this is Mae. We’re friends of your mommy and daddy.’ The woman smiled like an angel and knelt in the snow. Cecily wondered if her knees would freeze. ‘How would you like to come and live with us now?’ Her sweet, soft voice reminded her of Glinda's, The Good Witch of the North, from the Wizard of Oz. A wink competed with her smile. ‘I’m a little outnumbered with all these boys and I could use a little help keeping them in line, Cecily, dear. Hmm, what do you say?’
‘Why won’t they let me see Mommy and Daddy?” She had said. “I want to kiss them goodbye.’
Gus cupped his hand and held it before her. ‘Close your eyes and think of the best memory you have of them. Can you do that?'
‘Yes.’
‘Good, good. Now open them. We’re going to capture that memory and put it in here.’ He nodded toward his hand. ‘Ah-ha! I have it now. When we get to our house in Des Moines, I’ll put it in a box for you. Then all you have to do is lift the lid whenever you miss them and the memory will appear.’
Sometime during the long drive to Des Moines, she had fallen asleep. She awoke the next morning in a strange bed, in a strange room in a very strange, enormous house.
Mae’s voice brought her back from her childhood memories. “Charles, put the car in the garage and do come in for a bite to eat.” She turned to Cecily, her eyes misty. “You look more like your mother every day.”
“From the pictures I’ve seen, I’ll take that as a compliment.” She paused and looked at the clouds overhead. “I wish I'd known her better, and yet, so often, I still feel her near.”
“She’s here, I’m sure of it, and she was very beautiful. Her hair wasn’t as blonde as yours, and her eyes were blue…sky blue.”
A stab of pain pierced her heart. “Calder used to say my hair was almost as white as cotton and my eyes….” The pain returned at the mention of his name. She stumbled on the words. “He said…he said I was part chameleon; sometimes my eyes were purple, sometimes blue.”
Mae took her hand and gave it a squeeze. “Only a man would call violet purple. You going to be okay, darling?”
She nodded. Yes, but I’ll be better when this day ends.”
“Me too, dear, me too.”

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
John Creasy from Man On Fire. This character is played by Denzel Washington in the move and I have watched it many times over. Based on the 1980 novel of the same name by A. J. Quinnell, this is an intense, action-packed book and movie set in Mexico. It’s themed around the many kidnappings that happen in Mexico, this particular book and movie involving the kidnapping of a child. John Creasy is a man tormented by his own demons from his sins of the past. He was an assassin and is most definitely a bad-ass character. When the child, Pita, played by Dakota Fanning, is kidnapped, as her bodyguard, Creasy means to make everyone pay who was involved in her abduction. If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book, I highly recommend it if you love tortured heroes, violence, vengeance, and adoration between a child and her bodyguard.
What is your most treasured possession?
Without the slightest inkling of a doubt, my family. If you could choose to be a character in a book, who would it be?
This is a great question and an easy one for me to answer. Since my favorite book of all time is To Kill A Mockingbird, I would like to be Scout. All of the characters in this novel were well developed and grew in strength and integrity by the end of the book. But Scout was the anchor of all the characters. I would label her as an ‘old soul’. She was wise beyond her years, yet without even realizing it, revealed the prejudice and hatred the town folk held against the black community in the town. Scout was curious like a cat, always asking questions to learn more. She was kind to everyone and looked beyond their disabilities or shortcomings. Not only with the African Americans but with Boo Radley, who obviously suffered with mental disabilities. Scout was just the perfect narrator for this wonderful novel and through her personality brought out all the good and bad of all the other characters.
Which book have you read the most in your lifetime?
Other than To Kill A Mockingbird, I read a booked called The Windflower by Laura London (actually a husband a wife team by the name of Sharon and Tom Curtis). This is a pirate novel where an innocent young woman finds herself kidnapped and held on among some pretty rough seafarers. There is a lot of humor in this story, and some great twists at the end. No one is who you think they are, but you find out their true identities at the time. The writing was clever and very descriptive, although I suppose some would say filled with purple prose. I happened to like the details and think the fit a book set on the high-seas very well. I laugh over the heroine’s antics and naivete every time I read The Windflower. If you like historical romance with out-of-the-box characters and adventure on the high seas, you’ll like this book.
What is your favorite journey?
I haven’t taken it yet. Lord, please give me enough time on earth to visit every state in this great country and do it by RV – a plush, luxurious RV. That’s quite a goal, isn’t it?
What is your favorite quotation?
“Do Not Be Afraid.”This appears in the Bible 365 times. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. It’s a daily reminder from God to live every day of your life being fearless.
Dogs or Cats?
I cannot choose. I love all animals the same. Even the little spider. For some strange reason, I have it in my head that every living creature has a soul. My furry companion, Emma LaPounce, has been with me for ten years now. She’s getting old (like me). When I rescued her from the shelter, she didn’t like me much. She didn’t like any human much after her family moved out of town, took their furniture and left her behind. I’d visit her once a week, and she pretty much turned her nose up at me, or drooled all over me and shed hair like crazy. The vet said this was because she was so stressed out about being left. I had a little talk with Emma. I said, “You’re coming home with me. I promise to take very good care of you and I’ll never desert you.” We’ve been bonded at the hip every since and she’s brought a lot of joy into my life. I’d like to think I’ve brought a lot of love and security into hers.
What do you most value in a friend?
Loyalty, Truth and Staying power.
Which book that you’ve written is your favorite?
Where the Rain Is Madebecause I have a personal connection to that book with my youngest son. When he was 12, he was obsessed with the Native American way of life. We spent hours and hours in the library studying the different tribes, mostly the Cheyenne dog soldiers. Of course, I took notes, thinking he’d want them one day. By the time his fascination ebbed some, I had an entire notebook filled with the customs, beliefs and mythology of the dog soldiers. My son moved on to another fascination, the Italian mafia, I think. I moved on with my notebook and decided to write a story about a time wanderer who traveled back in time to help his beloved People, the Cheyenne. Where the Rain Is Made was nominated for a Bookie Award by Authors After Dark and has received many accolades. Update on my son. Now going for his Master’s Degree in Washington, D.C. and guess what he’s going to be? A college history professor, of course. Guess all those hours in the library paid off.
What are your writing quirks?
Just a few quick ones:Too many adverbs – those pesky “ly’ words in a book.He nodded his head. She shrugged her shoulders. What else would he nod? What else would she shrug. Yet we see this all the time in books.
What do you do as a hobby?
Visit and support my local animal shelter weekly. Garden – I love flowers, flowers and more flowers! Read when I have time, mostly thrillers and suspense, and dabble in genealogy. Although I don’t have much time for tracing the family trees these days. I’m too busy writing.
How did you come up with the idea for your book?
My latest story in an anthology to be released in September is called I Spy A Demon. I’m fascinated by the many different types of demons that exist in the world (whether fictional or real). I never knew there were so many until I started reading about them. I also love books about good vs. evil, light vs. dark. What could be more appropriate when we’re talking about those themes, Lucifer and his demons good vs. evil?
I think there’s a lot of readers out there who share my interest in the workings of the devil, the machinations of demons and good vs. evil (think demon hunters). At least I hope there are. What would your friends say is your best quality?
Oh, boy….this one is tough, but I suppose they would say I’m loyal, have staying power and I’m truthful – the same things I look for in a friend. They might say that sometimes I’m too truthful. What they really mean is blunt. I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings on purpose, but I suppose if you tell it like you see it (which might not always be right) you run the risk of hurting someone’s feelings. I hope I don’t do that. k.
Tell us about your other books?
Thank you for asking. I always love to share my books with others. I write in several genres (can’t seem to find one that can pin me down). I write paranormal (usually with a ghost or two), western romance, some contemporary romance (here I venture into suspense/thriller) and historical erotic romance. I love history, especially American history of the Wild West and around the time of the Civil War. But I also like writing about small towns and second-chance, modern love stories.
I’d love for you to visit my Amazon page and find a genre that interests you:
https://www.amazon.com/Keta-Diablo/e/B002BODURI/ Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand?
An eclectic assortment of books. Right now, you’d find:Orphan Moon, a young girl and a Texas RangerThe Kind Worth Killing, a ThrillerThe Bone Garden, Tess Gerritssen
Thank you so much for taking the time to ask me such intriguing questions. This was fun! Keta Diablo

Tagline 1: When a mermaid/sea witch is targeted by the devil for her powers, she uses everything she knows to protect herself, but the devil captures her lover and takes him to Hell, forcing her to follow.
Tagline 2: In a contemporary retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus, Siren Descending pits a sea witch against the devil in a quest to save her lover.

"The mermaid/sea witch Athenia battles to save her soul and her lover.
To repay a mage for betraying him, Athenia signed on as his apprentice. While she is with him, she vows to earn his trust and rekindle their relationship. However, though he teaches her some control of the elements, he denies her true power and keeps her at arm’s length. Rejected and isolated, she withdraws further into herself. When she’s courted by a mysterious and mesmerizing stranger, she’s frightened, but drawn to him. She’s tempted to give in to his demands, but the price may be too high.
When Athenia refuses the stranger’s advances, he takes the one person she needs the most, the mage. She must follow them to the depths of hell and fight for the man she cannot live without.
If you like Greek mythology, you’ll love this contemporary retelling of the story of Orpheus who followed his wife to the underworld in a tragic effort to save her life. Can Athenia succeed where Orpheus failed? Read Siren Descending for the answer.

In the mangrove swamp by their cabin outside Tarpon Springs, Athenia surfaced. Like the other mages of their group, Hawthorne Sanderson lived in a secluded spot where he could be part of the natural world yet close to the other mages of his circle. In a pair of worn, frayed cutoffs and no shirt, he sat at a picnic bench, staring at an oversized book spread open on the table in front of him. His golden skin gleamed in the sun, and his muscular chest and arms telegraphed his strength, causing her to catch her breath. With his gaze focused on the book, he didn’t appear to notice her. As she studied him, she hesitated in the shallows. While her heart thudded dully in her chest, she tried yet again to think of words that would convince him she’d changed. What can I do to get back the closeness we once shared? No matter how hard I try, he keeps his distance. At least, he’ll be pleased I saved the manatee baby because he cares deeply for all earth’s creatures. As he raised his hands, he made swirling motions, lifting sand from the ground and twirling it around until it twisted into a miniature dirt devil. With the mage power that gave him complete control of the elements, he compressed the sand while he brought his hands closer together. Then, he tilted his head forward and spoke a few words, too low for her to hear.As Thorne continued to press, the sand spun faster, became denser, coalesced into a glittering mass and blazed as though lit from within. His arms and shoulders trembled with effort, the muscles swelling and bunching.Blinded by a flash of intense light, Athenia blinked. When her vision cleared, a glass sculpture stood where the white whirlwind had been. About three feet high and two feet around, it resembled a creation by the famous glass artist, Chihuly, whose pieces Athenia had viewed and admired in St. Petersburg at his gallery. Long tendrils grew from an oval center, arching and twisting around one another. There’s an organic quality, like an undersea plant with undulating branches. And the colors... Green merged into purple, which fed into blue, then magenta, buttery yellow, and coral. As she leaned forward to stare at it, her jaw dropped open. How did he do that? When Thorne raised his head and caught her staring, he gave her a polite smile, not a welcoming one.Athenia waved. “Hi, I’m back. I feel great, and I can’t wait to tell you what happened.”“Excellent. Time for us to get started.” He swiveled around, so he faced the other direction.“Okay.” So cold and formal. Why can’t he relax a little? Once she shifted to human shape, she stepped out of the water. After she retrieved a towel and her clothes from a bag she stored at the dock, she dried off and slipped into her underwear, bra, nylon shorts and T-shirt. As she wrapped the towel in a turban around her dripping hair, she eyed the taut muscles of his back. “You can turn around now.”When he pivoted back toward her, he stared for a few seconds before he cleared his throat. “Right. There’s a lot to do today.” He gestured for her to sit.Instead, Athenia walked over to the abstract shape. “This is magnificent. You could sell art like this for thousands of dollars.”He frowned. “Since the mage lifestyle is simple, I don’t need the money. I made it to practice a new way of combining the elements, transmuting sand into glass by superheating the air molecules around it. It isn’t supposed to be decorative. Besides, it’s merely an experiment and I’ll probably deconstruct it in a day or two.”Her jaw sagged. “Oh no. Please don’t destroy this amazing creation.”He shrugged. “I’ll think about it, but it’s not functional.”“You could have made a plain, square slab rather than something colorful and exquisite.” She sat across from him. “Can’t you admit you admire beauty?”For a second, his gaze seemed almost yearning. “I appreciate lovely things.” He resumed the mien of gentlemanly disinterest she so despised. “However, beautiful things can be deceptive and dangerous. Did you ever notice how many poisonous plants sport brightly colored leaves or flowers?”She narrowed her eyes. “What are we talking about now?” A pang went through her chest. Is he referring to the betrayal?“We’re resuming the lesson, of course. We need to work on the potion for a salve to restore sunburned skin. Such a treatment would help people who stay out in the sun too long.”“Why not use sunscreen? They should avoid damaging their bodies in the first place.”He rolled his eyes. “Easy for you to say. Your Nerei skin never burns.”“If it did, I would prevent it. This ointment is pointless, nothing but a way to keep me busy.”He sighed. “It’s the next step in your training. Each lesson must be taught in order. Besides, this will stop many skin cancers, save lives, and prevent suffering. I’m anxious to have a finished product for the group the next time we get together.”“But sunscreen—”He interrupted her. “We humans don’t always wear it. Sometimes, we forget or run out, or it washes off. Remember, the mage philosophy is service before self. We use our power to help humans, Nerei, and all the creatures of this world. Only in that way do we grow and become deserving of our gifts.”She looked back at the shimmering sculpture whose gleaming glass and vibrant colors called to her. Reaching out, she touched it. Warmth radiated from it. “I want to make one of these.”He ran his hand across the back of his neck. “You aren’t ready. There are many more lessons to master first.”She shot him a mutinous glare. “I don’t want to make a treatment for people too stupid to come in out of the sun. I want to create something lovely like this.”

Which book have you read the most in your lifetime?
The book I have read the most is Jane Eyre. To me, this is the most beautiful romance I have ever read. Jane is a wonderful character, independent and strong, even when it gets her in trouble. Jane Eyre was made into a fantastic Broadway musical starring Marla Schaffel and James Barbour. I think I saw it three or four times. The cast recording is incredible.
Which book that you’ve written is your favorite?
This is kind of like asking a parent which child is your favorite? Of course, there’s no real answer. I loved my debut novel because it was my first. I nearly died of excitement the day I held the hard cover copy in my hand for the first time. I love my last published novel because it is the best so far, and I love my current work in progress because it is exciting to see the story come to life and think of the possibilities of where it could go.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
On the whole, writing energizes me. I get excited about plot twists and character growth. I love watching the story unfold, especially when things happen that I didn’t plan on or expect. Believe me, characters have a mind of their own. Because I’m an introvert, interacting with people is much more draining for me than working alone. Though writing can be tiring, overall, I find it gives me more energy and enthusiasm than it takes.
What were some of the challenges you faced on the road to publication?
Luckily, the first publisher I submitted my debut novel to contracted it. I was beyond excited. However, a week after its digital release, the publisher declared bankruptcy and closed. The book disappeared. Gone. Overnight. I cried. Then I submitted it to a few other publishers and Foundations Books offered me a contract. They have now published my two novels. I self-published The Sea Witch and the Mage. It’s a 10,000-word novelette, too short for my publisher.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the third book in the Love’s Siren Song series, Water Destiny. I’m also revising and polishing the first book in a new series, Witch Trial Legacy. It’s a paranormal romance, but doesn’t involve mermaids, mages or any kind of shifters. It’s set in Cassadaga, a spiritualist town in central Florida. The heroine has the gift of healing touch and the curse of visions of future tragedies which she can never prevent. She seeks help from the town mediums.
How did you come up with the idea for your book?
Siren Descending is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus, who followed his wife to hell and enchanted the denizens with his lyre. Because of his wonderful music, the ruler of the dead allowed him the chance to bring his wife back to life. However, he failed, and the story is a tragedy. When I started thinking about a book for this anthology, I wanted to feature a mermaid whose siren song mesmerizes all those who hear it and I knew I had to base it on the myth. I was never satisfied with the ending of that story and wanted to make it something I liked better. What could be more romantic than journeying to hell to bring back your beloved?
Are reader reviews important to you?
Absolutely! I don’t know any authors who don’t beg readers for reviews. The reviews don’t have to be long or glowing, just an honest sentence or two about the reader’s reaction to the book. I write lots of reviews of the books I read. I wish more readers would. Please, please, please. (Begging.)
What do you do when you don’t write?
I visit my horse and ride dressage. My sweet girl is recovering from a tendon injury, so I won’t be able to ride her for months. However, I take lessons on another lovely mare. I have competed in local schooling shows and may enter some more in the future.
I also belong to a clog dancing group. Clog dancing originated in Europe among workers who wore wooden clog shoes and danced during breaks to entertain themselves. Tap dancing developed from clogging. We have taps on our shoes and the steps add a percussive element to the music. I’ve been dancing about three years and it is hard! We memorize complicated routines to all types of songs from country/western to Halloween, Irish and Christmas. We perform at local nursing homes, retirement centers and festivals.
Tell us about your other books?
Water Dreams is my debut novel. Water-phobic Nik discovers mermaids and mermen plan to make her a lab experiment. They can’t take no for an answer and will go to any lengths to get what they need.In the small Florida town of Tarpon Springs, Greek American Nik Aronopulos avoids the water. She never goes to the beach and even avoids restaurants with views of the Gulf of Mexico. So, why would merfolk want to study her? When they tell her it’s her ability to stay out of water that interests them, she’s stunned. There’s nothing special about her...or so she thinks. Bas is the merman tasked with obtaining Nik’s cooperation. He needs her help to overcome his people’s greatest weakness—the need to rejuvenate often in the Gulf so they won’t dehydrate and die. Although they can shapeshift to look like humans, are stronger, and have many advantages over land dwellers, the Nerei dependence on water keeps them from freedom. When Bas finds himself drawn to Nik, his feelings interfere with his mission.Attempts to kidnap Nik because of the Nerei interest in her put her in jeopardy. When Bas is shot by a bullet meant for her, she must face her greatest fear to help him, or allow him to die. Her decision plunges her into a desperate journey where her feelings for him grow. The Sea Witch and the Mage is a novelette set in the Water Dreams world but is not a sequel. When Athenia decides she must defeat the wizard who killed her twin sister, she finds there is only one way—enslave Thorne, a human mage with powers she can use to overcome her enemy. However, she doesn’t count on finding him mesmerizing or needing him so much. What happens when a shapeshifting mermaid teams up with a man who controls the elements?Water Desires—When a strange Nerei (merman) carries an unconscious and badly injured Bas in from the Aegean Sea, Nik knows she must get him to an island in the Atlantic where a hidden spring of healing water will restore her Nerei lover. At the same time, Nik’s adoptive father is dying from a boating accident in her home town of Tarpon Springs, and he’s asking for her. While battling a strange illness which antibiotics won’t cure, Nik must figure out a way to save Bas and get home to help her father. When Bas follows Nik to Florida, he is forced to keep his distance from her. He has already escaped one death sentence for having a relationship with a human and he can’t risk another one. Still, he’s furious when Nik turns to her old friend, a mage Bas dislikes, to help her unravel the hidden truth behind her father’s accident. Water Desires is Book II in the Love’s Siren Song Series. The thrilling sequel to the award-winning Water Dreams will drag you under and not let you up for air until the end. If you like mermaids, mages and magical romance, you’ll love this book.
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand?
I love the Dark Tides series by Debbie Herbert and have started on some of her others as well. I’m also reading books by Keta Diablo, Karen Chance, Ilona Andrews, Caroline Wren and have probably read something from almost every paranormal romance author. When I find an author I like, I read everything they wrote before I move on to someone else. But I don’t just read romance. I also love mystery, horror, fantasy, sci fi and most all genre fiction. I also read as many books about the craft of writing as I can get my hands on. I’m truly a voracious reader.

A thin line separates the hunter from the hunted.
An ancient being, the last of his kind, a fiery woman sought by evil…and the story begins…
Charged with shielding the souls of the Chosen from demons, Gateway is of an ancient race, the last of his kind. A lifetime of fighting evil, a lonely existence has left him jaded, hardened, and from his perspective, there’s no such thing as a happy ending.
An orphan with anger issues, Katrina Hollinger has just lost another job because of her temper, a pile of “PAST DUE” notices are piled up waiting for her on her kitchen table, including an eviction notice, and to complicate her life even more, a tall stranger with major control issues seems to be trying to take over her life. To make matters even worse, he’s the spitting image of the man in her fantasies – just in time for Christmas.
The moment these two meet, the course is set for a ride beyond anything either of them could have imagined. They will both have to sacrifice their tenuous hold on reality and take major risks to come out intact.

Chapter One
Lu suddenly sat up in bed and looked around, frantic.
Someone or something was in her room. She felt the presence before she could see anything. Complete darkness closed in and the sensation of something trickling down her spine was unmistakable. It was happening again. Hellfire surrounded her bed. An unseen force clutched her chest and despite her training, her mind raced and her heartrate accelerated as each breath required more effort than the last until she felt herself sinking.
No. Not this time. Panting exactly like her mother had taught her, she bent from the waist, digging her nails into the mattress to ground herself while squeezing her eyes shut. Heat from the fire singed her skin, but when she blinked, gray smoke and the pungent smell of sulfur were the only remaining evidence of her vision…except the angry red welts on her arms and legs.
Therapist after therapist had told her none of this was real, the darkness only existed in her head, and that if any of the creatures she saw really existed, certainly one of them would have done something by now, harmed her in some way. There was also the problem of no one else being able to see her tangible nightmares. Still, she was not convinced. They were real. Everything she saw and felt was real, and the string of therapists she had seen since childhood, some even frequenting her home, well, most of them were clueless.
A handful were at least gracious enough to inform her adoptive parents that they did not feel qualified to help her. They were the honest ones and perhaps the smartest ones, but watching them sprint towards their vehicles, looking over their shoulders as if hell’s hounds were after them and she was somehow connected to them still stung. She had cried a lot at first, but eventually they just pissed her off. What none of the ones arrogant enough to stay understood was that it wasn’t the fear of something or someone hurting her that plagued her dreams day and night. It was the enticing pull of darkness, the constant battle raging inside that constantly gripped and played tug-of-war with the values her mother had tried to teach her.
Leaning towards her nightstand, Lu turned on the small lamp. She had always felt it in her bones, and now she sat, staring at physical proof. She grabbed her cellphone from its spot on top of the book where she’d left it before dozing off, then snapped pictures of the welts on her arms and legs before falling back on her pillow. She needed sleep. As if a scheduled introduction to her new boss wasn’t enough, the annual staff party was being held tonight. From everything she had been told about the event, dark circles and mahogany brown paper bags under her eyes simply would not do.
An hour later, Lu glanced at the alarm clock next to her bed. Three-thirty a.m. Deafening silence closed in on her, mocking her attempts to sleep until she finally gave in. She jumped up, tossed the covers aside, and padded to the bathroom.
Flicking on the light switch, she glanced down at her arms, then her legs.
No surprises there.
The welts were gone.
They had completely disappeared as if they’d never existed. She dashed back to her room and grabbed her phone, grateful she’d thought to take pictures this time. Dammit! She’d forgotten to put it back on the charger. Shaking her head, she returned to the bathroom, grimacing when she caught her reflection in the mirror. She’d never considered herself vain, but lack of sleep was really starting to take a toll on her appearance.
Sidelining her trivial thoughts for another time, she glanced around hoping to make use of her current state of insomnia. No better time than the present to check out the commons. She couldn’t possibly wait an entire week for her new washer-dryer combo to arrive, so she shrugged on her robe, quickly separated her clothes, threw them in the new, cedar laundry basket she just couldn’t resist, then stepped into the hallway outside her room. She figured at least there wouldn’t be anyone else in her way at this hour. Crowds were not her favorite thing. Too many unknowns and too many sudden moves made her nervous.
She peered in each direction before heading down the hall. As expected, the entire resort seemed to be completely still. Just as she rounded the corner, she sensed a presence but it was too late. A man suddenly appeared and their bodies collided. The basket slipped from Lu’s grasp and her clothes flew everywhere, eventually landing in scattered pieces along the hallway.
Bending to pick up her clothes, she glanced up as the cause of the collision bent down in front of her, way too close for comfort.
He was tall. She estimated 6’4” or more, blond with broad shoulders, but the first thing she noticed about him was the dark shades. That, and his unnerving ability to make her mouth water. Allowing her gaze to drop slightly, she mentally shook her gaping stare from his perfect lips only to notice his perfectly tailored, expensive black suit. The seemingly unnecessary accessories added to the darkness surrounding him, and the suit, no matter how fashionable, was just, well… wrong.
Despite her inability to see his eyes, the tilt of his lips alone captivated her. The warm sensation in her belly nearly sent her reaching for her pills again. Excitement. She could barely remember the last time she’d felt it, especially this particular kind of excitement, the kind for which only a man could be the catalyst.
Lu offered the stranger a shaky smile in return as they began retrieving her things and placing them in the basket again. She was so preoccupied with what his reasons might be for wearing the shades and an expensive suit at this hour, she paid little attention to his hands.
“Hmm.”
Lu looked up to determine the reason for his provocative verbalization to witness his unabashed admiration of her black, lacy, silk panties. He held them up between them with both hands, turning them from side to side.
“Put those down,” she snapped, snatching the panties from him before he could comply, then emitted an involuntary hiss when an electrical current sizzled along her fingers and rushed up her arm the moment they made contact. Sitting back on her haunches, she tossed the panties into the laundry basket, glaring at him. “I can manage the rest on my own, thank you.” She couldn’t keep the edge out of her voice, but then, she wasn’t sure she wanted to.
Cursing herself for setting foot outside her condo with curlers and no makeup, Lu squared her shoulders as much as she could and continued as if she wore her best suit to match his. “What are you doing here this time of night, anyway?”
The man’s smile disappeared instantly, revealing a deep scowl as his full lips turned down at the corners. “I could ask you the same question, Nalungo.”
Lu drew back, glancing behind her to make sure no one else was close by. “Who are you and how do you know my name? Nobody calls me my whole name, especially not here.”
He held out his hand. “Adrien Savoy. I make it a priority to know as much as I can about my employees, Ms. Jelani.”Unwilling to touch him again, Lu refused his handshake. Adrien Savoy, the multi-billionaire owner of the entire Legacy Resort industry, and her new boss, was lying and she knew it. But why?
Before she could respond, he leaned forward and scooped up the rest of her underwear despite her protests, dropping them in the basket one-at-a-time.
“You are most welcome.” Without another word, he stood and walked away.
Once again, she had to tear her gaze from him as he turned the corner and sauntered down the hallway past her flat. Obviously, she thought, Adrien Savoy assumed that being a billionaire entitled him to walk all over everyone around him. Can you say sexual harassment? Her mind said one thing but her body clearly said the opposite. She could still feel tingling from his touch, and the slow rhythm in his gait left no doubt that he was powerful and confident, two traits she had to admit she found irresistible. There would be no need for him to harass her because consent was imminent.
What are you doing? She thought, frowning as she stood, bent down and lifted her basket, then continued on to the commons to do her laundry. Biting the inside of her lower lip, she admitted the third thing she couldn’t resist about Mr. Savoy – darkness.

Why do you write?
I write for two main reasons: 1. Reading has always been one of my favorite things, and I feel gratitude towards authors who offer an escape from the difficulties of real life. I strive to do the same, and in writing, I manage to escape as well.2. Human and animal rights. Animals and their welfare play a prominent role in my stories, and I am driven to subtly shed light on the dearth of Black and interracial female heroines as standards of beauty and desirability. Too often, people from other cultures don’t realize the lack and the resulting negative impact erasure and subsequent neglect have on us as women.
What genre does most of your work fall under?
Urban fantasy/ paranormal romance. I’m also collaborating on a mystery with Muffy Wilson, and after its release I’m working on a psy-thriller/suspense with romantic elements to be released next year.
Why did you choose that genre?
Feels like home to me. These sub-genres allow my imagination complete freedom, and I can better offer the sense of escape that I’m seeking.
What are some of the drawbacks of this genre?
There are so many creative authors, thinking of something that hasn’t been done to death can be challenging.
What are some of the benefits?
In some ways, the drawbacks are the benefits as well; i.e., accepting the challenge to think outside the box and create yet another world for readers to escape to is exhilarating. I enjoy taking real people who have always considered themselves to be ordinary, and placing them in extraordinary, supernatural situations and environments. It adds even more fire when the “ordinary” person develops strong feelings for a paranormal being, or in some instances finds that they, themselves possess exceptional abilities.
How does your work contribute to the genre?
I write interracial/multicultural characters who are not only dealing with the main plots, romance, and conflict, but there’s always a subplot dealing with a real-life issue such as animal cruelty, human rights issues, and racism. The subplots don’t slap readers in the face and snap them away from their escape, but I like to think they shed light on issues that might not have been considered in the same way before. What would the title of your life story be? And why?
Driven. I’ve always felt driven to do something with the gifts God has given me. Now, managing chronic illness along with daily pain and numerous surgical procedures, has added a level of urgency because I’m constantly faced with my own mortality.
Besides writing, what other creative passions do you have?
Music and art. I also love dance, but with my tomboy roots, I’m about as graceful as a donkey.
Which quote best sums up your writing style?
“Strong heroines, badass heroes, fast-paced, action packed…lots of twists and turns…filled with romance, suspense, and drama…”Totally Addicted 2 Reading
Tell us about your background and education?
My degrees are in music (piano and vocal performance), counseling psychology (mental health, substance abuse, and career decisions), and I have all but dissertation (ABD due to illness) towards my Ph.D. Along the way, I’ve taught every academic subject, private piano and voice lessons, and worked from child support investigations to mental health and substance abuse therapy to band director and college career counselor. It’s been an interesting journey so far.
Which are your three favorites?
Whichever story I’m writing at the moment. Right now, it would have to be “Devil’s Claim,” from the “Wings of the Wicked” boxed set, “Dangerous Beauty, Sexy Beast,” and “Dark Opius,” a Cursed Angel story from the Charmed Legacy.
What writing advice would you give to yourself prior to completing your first novel?
Write at least 2 books of an entire series before releasing the first one, then release them 2-months apart. That way, by the time people start to forget, there’s another one in the wind. Wish I’d taken that advice.

Tagline 1: Would love unit them in purpose…or in death?
Tagline 2: With two clans on the verge of extinction, Sapphira never expected to fall in love.

Princess Sapphira Leash was a succubus and shape shifter. She was also heir apparent in royal lineage to her coterie. Secret stipulations to her royal ascension were detailed in the Royal Grail and could only be revealed to the Princess: Sapphira was unable to assume her rite of passage to the throne until she found the perfect royal human mate that would share her bed for a purpose…but not the throne.
Failure to do so doomed the coterie.
Brock Hanley, a prince in his own right and royal protector of his father, the King, and his older brother, Bruwyn, heir to the throne, fought with strength and loyalty against those that threatened to overthrow the sovereignty with deceit and trickery.
Sapphira, on a journey as part of her secret stipulations, woke in the blazing sun on the royal sands of a distant shore protected by Brock, who discovered her sleeping. Her delicate hand blocked the glare of the sun as Sapphira rose her head from the scorching sand and saw the prince for the first time.
Would they fight, side-by-side defending all that they loved and cherished and seize their rite of passage to ascend to royalty bound by danger, loyalty and love? Or die trying?
The closer Brock Hanley gets to Sapphira Leash the harder it is for her to resist having sex with him…or killing him.
I was born when we kissed; I lived in your embrace while we loved. I died when we parted.

My mind returned to the present, a salty breaker whipping my face and stinging my cheeks.
Perhaps it was tears. Perhaps it was the surf. Either way, I was not quite prepared to think of the responsibility that lay before me…not now…not just yet…nor the looming death of my father. Not yet, perhaps not ever.
I rode the dancing turquoise-black currents. Distracted by duty, I amused and delayed the inevitable by collecting seashells, sea-flowers and colored coral on my journey from the small island to my calling. It felt more like play than purpose, but purpose it was. And it took a lot longer to cover the distance than I expected. The ache in my shoulders, back and thighs reminded me just how long it took and how wrong I was to attempt such an unnecessary dramatic flair — to fly.
I was also aware that, swimming, I felt so much lighter with each stroke and I recalled the sensation vividly.
As I swam, the transformation began. My tail began to shrink slowly, scales fell away like glitter into the watery depths and my short, squat legs grew and stretched, supple… even graceful… into long lengths of elegant svelte limbs. My arms lengthened with each slicing stroke into the cool salty water. The very act of swimming took on more difficulty as I lost my natural rudder. While I began the journey swimming with my arms short and squat, more under me than above me, it seemed each pull of my weight through the surf lengthened them, too. They were elongated with flexible digits at the end that extended my reach even further. I could cup them and pull myself up, or swim flexibly in figures with the current. I was becoming so different. It was glorious freedom. My flesh, now decorated, bronze and silken with a supple skin, glistened in the moonlight with a hunger to be touched.
What was once a youthful curiosity felt more like a welling, edgy eagerness that increased with ache, passion, desire.I could not stop myself from departing my objective and frolicking in the breaking waves, diving to the ocean floor and scavenging for keepsakes of my adventure, bits of jewels, coral, and shells to save. I enjoyed the new form I was taking on and I found it strong, responsive. I rolled to my back and lay upon the ocean surface bobbing with a rhythmic motion that was synchronous and in harmony with the ocean itself. I gazed at the moonless night sky adorned with millions of flickering secrets all teasing for attention with brilliance. I was young, but I had knowledge of a great many of the galaxies as told to me by the Old Ones in our pod. Some had come from far away, others born to the land of our fathers, all became family. Their secrets became ours just as ours became their heritage.
I let my mind wander at the sheer amazement of it all as I collected treasures of my journey. When I ascended the water to the beach through the beating surf, my new legs failed me once or twice, until I became accustomed to their use. No doubt the long swim had worked them to exhaustion. When they buckled beneath my weight, the cool sand cushioned my fall as my upper limbs braced my descent. I was so tired then and I must have fallen into a deep sleep.
The tide was rising with the morning fog and lapped at my extremities. It reminded me of the long, careless swim I had taken in the darkness. My shoulders and thighs ached. My back was twisted and sore. I knew swimming the final distance from the atoll might not have been the smartest thing I ever did, but it seemed clever at the time. This transformation was expected but I began to think that I was more romantic than I dared to admit. The distance the night before was obscured by the cover of darkness and no doubt the late hour and my excitement. Somehow, I reasoned, swimming and walking in from the surf would seem less suspicious than setting down from the black sky shrouded in darkness. There was logic in the thinking at the time. I just couldn’t see it now.
Sure, setting down at night, in the dark, obscured by a moonless night was more obvious than walking out of the surf, morning bright, the sun announcing my arrival to all who may have witnessed my arrival and naked body. Yes, that made a lot of sense.
I raised my head and spat the salty grit caught between my lips into the sand. My lips were soft and foreign with a grittiness caked between the tender creases. I wiped it off with a tiny hand and touched my lips. They were smooth and supple. What was, at one time, a staple in my young life seemed foreign and unpleasant. I needed a bit of sand and pebbles to strengthen my bones and scales with minerals and salt. But I had no scales, no tail, no mane of course spiny, bristling red backbone. It was all too distant to me. The ribbons that once held my mane now ran though hair painted a deep red by the burning sun with an onyx shimmer from the depths of the sea. I wove my collection of sea treasures in through the strands and secured a gathering in a topknot while the tendrils of the ribbon fell down my back.
I felt so different.

Who is Muffy Wilson in her own words?
I am a wife, mother, daughter and sister first and an author of provocative romance about love, sex, hope and passion second. I was born in Texas to traditional parents. With two older brothers. I was the youngest, the family "princess," indulged and pampered. My father was a career Colonel and pilot in the U.S. Air Force which required our family to travel extensively. I spent my formative years in Europe and 'came of age' in France (a state of affairs that gave my father much cause for concern one loooong summer on the Italian Riviera!) which forged my joie de vivre and love for books, writing and education. I liked Aldo a lot then too.
What is one thing you would like the world to remember you for?
I am a simple person. I would like to be remembered as a good person, loving wife and nurturing mother. I never met a stranger nor turned anyone away that needed help. And I have tried hard to learn from my mistakes but I am not always successful in that endeavor!
What got you into writing?
An old boyfriend from high school. We reconnected after all these years and he writes self-help real estate books. And I was selling real estate on the side, so we still had a lot in common. That said, I took a significant departure from self-help to provocative and paranormal romance.
Are you a full-time author or do you have a day job as well, and if so, what do you do?
When I first started writing fiction in 2010, I was still working (I was a Regional Director for IBM, owned a resort on Washington Island, Wisconsin, and have been a General Manager for high end retail furniture) but I have since retired and devote most of my free time to writing, my family, my pups and anything that will keep me from doing any housework!!
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?
My story lines come my life and from ordinary people: watching them, listening to them, talking to them about dreams, romance, passions ~ about their regrets and when they lost their heart, their virginity...a loved one. And then, somehow magically, I'll have a dream on one of those many nights I cannot sleep and a story title will come to me. It always starts with the title for me. Always. That's the piece that takes root, grabs me and blossoms.
What is your ‘Writing Routine’, if any?
I sit in the living room with my husband, when he does his crossword puzzles, and I write. And write. And write. His questions about clues and comments about the news or a movie often go unanswered when I am in the "zone".
Tell us a saucy/intimate/personal story about yourself.
Well, I was almost 36 when I got married. A child of the 60's anf 70's, I had a very free way of thinking about men. I thought men were healthy--at least for me. Since I worked in a man's business world, I lived my life much as men do when it comes to romance. And when I met the man that would steal my heart, I never looked back.
What are your Top (10?) Writing Tips? Writing Advice?
Never start with a prologue or the weather, but start.Don’t worry if your first draft is any good; it won’t be. Just start.Write every day, at the same time for the same length of time. Self-discipline is only a routine. But you gotta start…So start.Write what you would like to read, from your heart. And start.Allow yourself to change your mind. Change is a reflection of inspiration — and growth. A new perspective. But start.Name your work immediately and give it life, honor, position, credibility, purpose. You’ve started!Keep notes of anything favorite, interesting, or inspiring: names, titles, phrases, descriptions, music. Each new voice requires a new paragraph. If you can, only use “said”. Anything else is "fluff" wastes ink pretentiously. I'm still learning that one! Get started!Be kind to yourself. Your work may not be great or Nobel material, but it is yours. Accept that your voice will change and evolve, but it is still yours. Start! There is no secret to writing. But there is an enemy — procrastination. Just start… Always start.
