My Way (An Indie Author's Perspective)

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
Oh, and more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes, there were times,
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way

(Select lyrics from “My Way,” a song popularized by Frank Sinatra in 1969)

The journey I speak of, going my way or the highway, is that of planning each charted course along page 1 to 562 in my second novel—coming soon—'An Enlightening Quiche.' Submitted for publication on March 31st, I received the electronic galley proof on Friday, the 13th of May.

Delighted to view the cover proof configured from my vision, ‘Ol Brown Eyes soon delved into the proof copy. It sure makes a difference reading extra-large print in comparison to squinting over hill and dale on terrain in Times New Roman, font size 12. To my chagrin, I’ve detected pesky spacing issues with various hyphenated words, and found one inconsistency to get rid of.

Still, all in all, I’m glad I embarked on this 8-yr. journey “my way” through self-publication because I’m in control of the whole process, and every decision is mine. Under no delusion, I realize the uphill struggles for an indie/self-published author post-publication from standing alone. Marketing fiction can be a tough sell, so ample time and, more than likely, money are required to fire up the passion for promoting and making a sale.

Most importantly, I wrote this second novel in the genre of Women’s Fiction my way. Other than two literary agents in the guise of my cats, who either sit at my feet or close by, monitoring everything I do at the keyboard, I’ve held my ground in plotting the story. I don’t seek suggestions or opinions to appease or appeal to any general consensus pertaining to what might or might not reel in a potential reader. The day I start second guessing myself, I’d better shut down my writing program.

Currently rereading the electronic galley proof for the second time around, the end is near, so I face the final curtain before submitting this file whose corrections will be implemented in the ebook conversion.

For now, from the Prologue of 'An Enlightening Quiche':

Cocooned inside the security blanket of matrimonial bliss while sipping a cup of coffee and looking out the window above the kitchen sink onto Fleur-de-Lis Avenue, I stared into the past and marveled how destiny aligns the stars in the universe to predetermine our own fate.
