Looking for an escape?

Dear Reader,

Hope this finds you and yours sheltered and well.

Three years ago I published Camino Island. Starring no lawyers, the novel is about priceless manuscripts that are stolen from a prestigious library and make their way through the black market to Bruce Cable, a bookstore owner and rare-book dealer on Camino Island, a small fictional place in Florida.

By the time I finished writing it, I knew I would go back there for another story. Featuring many of the same characters but none of the original plot, Camino Winds is a sequel of sorts—even though it in no way requires you to have read Camino Island. It begins with a hurricane, in the middle of which a writer new to the island is murdered. The killer leaves behind almost no clues, and the local police are too overwhelmed by the storm’s aftermath to investigate. It is Bruce Cable who sets out to solve the murder.

When The Firm came out many years ago, one critic gleefully dismissed it as nothing more than a “beach book.” What’s wrong with beach books? Who doesn’t like to spend a long summer afternoon by the pool or in a hammock with a page-turner, lost in another world?

With Camino Island, my goal was to write a delightfully entertaining beach book, one with no message, no issue, no cause, no great injustice to be grappled with. It worked well enough, and I was encouraged to revisit the genre and the island.

Now, with the April 28 publication near and the world staggering from a historic pandemic, I hope that Camino Winds will be a diversion, an entertainment, a way for you to get lost in another world, if only for a short while.

Stay safe out there.

All best,

Pamela To John Grisham - Can’t wait to read (actually listen) to Camino Winds! I devour (inhale? injest? thrive on? - you’re the better wordsmith for descriptions) between 2-4 audiobooks a week. With Bluetooth audio (I highly recc bone conduction headsets) & an immersive tome, I can barrel through my day highly energized and incredibly productive. I especially enjoy author’s with a dramatic/mystery/crime series, since it can be easier to follow (ex. sliding on broken-in loafers vs stiff new ones). So, think of your second approach to the Camino folks as my audio equivalent of comfy leather slip-ons. Can’t wait!

PS - Please consider boosting audio production aspects of future audiobooks. Distinct/individual lead character voices (played by an ensemble), soft environment sound effects and occasional background instrumental sound for dramatic context. It’s wonderful when a handful of lead characters are defined by distinct voices - it adds to the color/flavor/richness of the story. Just don’t let the final product resemble the hokey ‘old radio show’ flavor. More like listening to an episode of Law and Order without watching it...
I’d love to help test it out as a veteran audiobook listener!

Wendy Bailey I'm not sure why I never read any of your books until recently. Maybe because I thought all the lawyer/courtroom talk would be boring. Man, have I been missing out. I've only read three of your books but they are all on my "To Read" list. You have quickly become one of my favorite authors. Best wishes to you and your family.

E.P. McKenna Hi John,
Have you written any of the screen plays for your books that converted to movies? And if so, aside from formatting, what other ways is that process different? And have you ever written the screenplay first, and then converted it into a book?
Thanks John.

Rich Allan Wasn't so crazy about this one. Love all of your books, but a little slow in the beginning, story, however, does pick up at the end. Keep writing you definitely have a future as an author! Rich Allan
