The DrawWho’s next?
The Draw is a story about a retirement home and the residents' obsession with the death of one of their own. Gambling on who the unlucky resident was seemed amusingly morbid to me.
This is a short but entertaining read. I find myself hard-pressed to call it a book at 42 pages long, but as a long short story, it works just fine.
This story seemed like it would be welcomed as an episode of The Twilight Zone or Tales from the Crypt.
I enjoyed the residents' morbid fascination with the death of one of their own and the irony as they went from concern to selfishness in a heartbeat when they realize that the deceased had the best room in the place and now it was up for grabs.
Things take a turn to the dark side when we realize how far some will go for the vacated room. With shades of ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ to round out the story.
An enjoyable read with a twist and an ending that mirrors the beginning.
