Where Does Inspiration Come From? Kimber Silver

I became connected with up and coming novelist Kimber Silver when I first got on Twitter a few years back. I was drawn to her as a fellow book lover and I loved her reviews of books she felt passionately about. What I didn’t know about her at the time was her pitch-perfect ear for short-story writing. I could tell from the first piece she shared that she had a real grasp of what made short fiction work. And with every subsequent piece she posted, I knew she had real talent.

I was thrilled when I found out Kimber had written her first novel, which is now with a literary agent. I was fortunate enough to be a test reader for the first chapter and I was very intrigued, and not content with just a sample. I know my Goodreads friends have the same reverence for a good story, otherwise they wouldn’t be connecting with others in cyberspace to share their love for the written word and searching for their next book. And that is why I wanted to share Kimber’s journey from reader to writer, for all of those fellow readers—like me—who feel they could never make the transition from reader to writer. Kimber and I are both proof to the contrary.

It’s my pleasure to introduce Kimber Silver:

I grew up in a small farming community where nothing out of the ordinary happened. We ate meatloaf every Tuesday and rarely met anyone new—not the ideal place for a child with an overactive imagination and energy to burn. I suspect that in the name of self-preservation, my grandmother introduced me to reading early in life; I discovered that a world of possibilities lay between the covers, and I was hooked.

I exercised my fertile imagination via a boy and a black stallion on a beach in a faraway land. In the pages of a novel, I could be best friends with a teenage detective as we solved all manner of crimes together. Stories were my ticket out of Podunk Nowhere, and I never looked back.

My love of reading sparked my journey into writing. I’m never certain where I’m going to find inspiration. Something as small as a random comment made by a friend will send me off to research a new tale. Or perhaps an unusual building glimpsed through the window of a taxi, while exploring a new city, will set my imagination ablaze. Whatever brings an idea to life, I sincerely believe that there is always a little magic involved.

Kevin Ansbro What a wonderful interview!

Here on Goodreads, we know Kimber as an avid reader and a writer of intuitive, buoyant reviews, so it's wonderful that the manuscript for her first novel is now with a literary agent!

I've often said that some of the reviewers on this site should turn their hand to writing, so I'm delighted when it happens.
I cannot wait to read it once it's published. Well done, Kimber, and great interview, Cynthia!

You are very welcome, Kimber, and the best of luck!
I greatly enjoy your vibrant book reviews and am therefore intrigued to see how you take that writing style into a full-length novel.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the post, Kevin! I think of you often and hope you are well and working on something wonderful, either a new novel or more fantastic short stories.

I agree there are a lot of passionate readers here on Goodreads whose reviews are so insightful and well-written, it seems like they a natural gift for writing. I also think being an ardent reader is essential if one wants to be a writer.

Please let me know when you're finished with whatever you're working on! : )

Best,
Cynthia

Thank you, Cynthia. Lovely to hear from you. My latest novel is with the publishers and I've only recently emerged from my Batcave, blinking into the light.
But I don't want my stuff to detract from Kimber's amazing achievement.
Go, Kimber!

Maureen Turner I also know Kimber Silver through Twitter and so I was intrigued to read this interview and learn a little more about her. There can be no pastime more pleasurable than reading. It is something enjoyed in solitude and yet it opens up whole worlds for that solitary participant. Looking forward to reading Kimber's debut novel.

Cynthia Hamilton You put that so nicely, Maureen! An ardent reader who spreads his or her wings and takes that leap into writing is a joyous thing to behold. I remember my trepidation when I decided to start my first novel. I wasn't brave enough to tell anyone what I up to, in case I fell flat on my face. That's one reason I love supporting other authors, new and established.

Well said, Maureen! Thank you for taking the time to read this fun interview.
Cynthia was very kind in her introduction, and I enjoyed sharing a bit about my bookish past. I'm glad you found it entertaining!
I look forward to reading your work as well! :-)

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] I don't Tweet, Facebook, or Insta, or use any 'social media' except Goodreads. Here I was fortunate to meet Kimber Silver through her always generous comments on book reviews of mine and others. This lead me to reading Kimber's own erudite and interesting reviews and I not surprised that she has hidden ambitions to become an author.

Thank you, Cynthia, for showing us a little of the 'secret' side of Kimber. I wish her every success with her debut novel!

And thank you for your wish for success!

Thank you, Laysee! I appreciate you taking the time to read my interview with Cynthia. You are always so kind.
The process of traditional publishing can be a long journey. I would be honored to have you read my work once it is out if it seems like a story that would interest you.
I delight in your amazing reviews, and I am surprised that you don't write books. :-)

Fran Kimber....I am excited for you, too! I had no idea you were a wordsmith. Sending much love and luck your way for a successful book launch!

Thank you for your wonderful comments, Terence! Kimber truly loves the written word, and she enjoys sharing her reading experiences with other book lovers. I don't know if you've read any of her short fiction, but her stories are quite delightful. I can't wait to read her first full-length novel.

Happy reading!
Best,
