Sedition I: Xian - Sneak Peak

'Allo Guvnors!

I'm feeling kind of frisky tonight, so I thought I'd post a sample chapter.

While I could give a little background on Kenji and Xian, in the end, after giving it much thought, I decided: nah!

If you'd like to know more about my protagonists, you should read the Rebellion Books (particularly 2 and 3) or go out and preorder Sedition I: Xian while it's still 1/2 priced (or later when it's full price if you really, really love me (laugh)).

Me being me, all of my books have a bit of my sometimes dark and twisted yet fun and playful sense of humor. Sedition is no exception.

Enjoy!

P.S. Due to formatting limitations within this blog, this chapter is posted using basic, block style paragraphs as opposed to normal, narrative style indented paragraphs. The book, however, uses the traditional narrative style indented paragraph format.

Sample Chapter

Lady Xian hid in her favorite, secluded courtyard - her eyes glued to the remnants of her lunch, remnants that now lay scattered across the snow, near the little creek.

Crouched down in the gazebo, she waited patiently for her tiny guest to make yet another of his more and more frequent appearances – a hastily made wooden trap in the ready.

Coming across his charge, Kenji watched for a long moment, his head tilted.

“You can come out now, little friend,” Xian whispered softly. “I won’t hurt you. I promise.”

“Little friend?” Kenji asked from just behind her.

Xian cried out in alarm, startled.

How in the hell did he always manage to appear as if out of thin air? she wondered, agitated.

Grabbing his hand and yanking him down into a crouching position, Xian began to whisper. “Little friend is a baby weasel of sorts,” she supplied.

“A weasel?” he repeated.

Xian nodded. “Remember last week, when one of Su-Gyeong’s cats dug out that poor weasel’s den?”

He nodded.

“Well, one of the kits survived. If I can catch him, I can tend to his wounds.”

“Why?” Kenji whispered.

“So he won’t die,” she replied sarcastically.

“It’s a weasel,” he said. “Maybe it’s his fate to die.”

“Maybe it’s his fate that I come along, see his plight and save him,” she countered.

“Then you might want to try again tomorrow, Tomoe Gozen,” he replied.

“Why?” she asked.

“Because your prey just ran off – with a nice-sized piece of your fish I might add.”

“What?” Xian breathed, agitated.

“He’s already made off with the loot,” he repeated. “Just now. While you were busy talking to me.”

Xian groaned in agitation – standing as she dropped the trap’s rope.

“Even then,” Kenji continued, also rising. “You’ll likely never catch him with that thing.” He gestured to her trap.

“And I suppose you can do better?” she retorted, her arms folding across her chest.

“My 6-year-old cousin could do better,” he replied, as straight faced as always.

“Alright,” she replied. “Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is?”

“Because it’s a waste of time and energy,” Kenji replied.

Lady Xian smirked. “As if you have anything better to do,” she taunted.

Xian wasn’t exactly wrong on that point, he reluctantly admitted to himself.

“Whoever catches Little Friend can decide his fate,” she continued. “If you catch him, you can leave him to the elements and I won’t interfere. However, if I catch him, you have to help me save him.”

“Agreed,” he replied - though he knew well Choi Xian would likely try to save the animal either way.

“He’ll likely stay in his den until tomorrow,” she said, turning to leave the courtyard. “I’ll see you then.”

“Until then,” he agreed with a slight bow.

Certain Lady Xian was gone, Kenji gave a lyrical whistle.

But moments later, the little white weasel came bounding out of his hastily improvised den, a half-eaten piece of fish still clutched in its jaws. Dropping his prize to the ground, the small ermine hurriedly wolfed down Xian’s fish before bounding over to Kenji and stopping at his boots.

Picking up the small weasel, Kenji held it so they were eye to eye.

“I thought I told you not to leave my room,” Kenji chided the wayward animal.

Unrepentant, the weasel licked his finger in reply.

Carefully tucking the small stoat in the inner pocket of his shirt, Kenji picked up Xian’s trap and headed back to his rooms.
