If you have ever paid any taxes, you know about the income tax. The more you earn the more you have to pay in taxes. (I will keep my opinion on taxes to myself for today)
There is another type of tax many governments are floating around now (and incredibly even implementing) called a wealth tax.
In the case of a wealth tax, if you own something valuable, regardless of whether you earn income or not, they want you to pay taxes on the value of the item.
Yea, I know…
But here is where it gets a little crazy. Most of the software you use today probably implements some form of wealth tax on you as the entrepreneur or author.
The software I moved away from this Spring after 5 years (I am not 100% out of it yet) has a heavy wealth tax. (I won’t name it, but you can literally pick any software that starts with K and ends with A) Exhibit A – Email Contacts Wealth Tax
They charge you $97/month for their starter package. That includes up to 2500 email contacts. Not emails sent, just email contacts. Once you hit 2501, you have to move up to their next tier ($197/mo) whether you send any emails or not.
That is the equivalent of a wealth tax. You are being charged for your asset whether you use it or not.
The thing that irks me is the cost of having email contacts in the system is virtually nothing, and should be covered by the monthly fee. It only really costs the company money if you send a lot of emails. Exhibit B – Multiple Course Wealth Tax
If you have more than 2 courses on the K platform, whether those courses have students in them or are even for sale, you must bump up that second tier.
Yep, if you have three courses being build with no students and no sales, you pay $197/mo.
Arguably, the crazy priced course-only platforms get more ridiculous because they tax you on the number of courses, and when you are at the lower tiers they make it up with surcharges up to like 6.5% on top of your credit card fee. Exhibit C – Custom Domain Wealth Tax
This one bit me hard. I have many different domains (over 50 I would guess right now), but in most systems they only allow you to actually use 1-3 without penalty.
So If I want a one page site with an optin, for just the name of my book while maintaining one for my course name and one for my name. That counts as 3.
The K Man (ie platform) will then charge me $10/mo for each additional custom domain. Many other platforms simply make you move up to the next tier for more domains. At one point, they were nickel and diming me to the tune of an extra $110/month on top of their second tier ($197/mo). In fact, one month I was forced to move to “gold” at $297/mo plus the $100/mo.
Kind of crazy, when you can purchase your domain for $8 on Namecheap, but have to pay your software $10-100s a month to use it.
Eventually, I just started redirecting my domains to pages on my raybrehm.com site. It wasn’t that I couldn’t afford it, but I think I am like most people who hate lighting money on fire for no real reason.
