Review Synopsis

Ellie Pipe wanted to die….well, her greatest desire is to change the life she is living. Ellie finds her greatest comfort in the local cemetery, where she has peace from her mom, the despicable stepfather, the pettiness of those at school, everything. So she desires to remain.; so one day, while there she slits her wrist (more to just have the physical pain to stop the emotional pain and the emptiness within herself.)

But Ellie is not aware that she is being watched; His name is Marcus Marble, incredibly handsome and fascinatingly mysterious, every girls dream. Marcus, saves Ellie’s life(Unbeknownst to her…she believed her attempt was failed.) Ellie’s first reaction after waking up and seeing Marcus is anger, because she is embarrassed at the thought he might have seen her desperation. But Marcus antagonizes her, and then there is a back and forth of angry quips, but underneath a growing attraction, and passion.

Marcus shows up at school, and soon the two are soon inseparable. Ellie, has quit the cheer squad, changed her appearance and is basically becoming a completely different person since her sister Darcy died. Marcus for his part, the reader discovers later, is a Neolistic Vampire; who has been watching Ellie since seeing her at the cemetery, times before the event where he saved her life. He had fallen in love and wanted her for himself,; he wanted to claim her, which would be killing her, and then she would return as his. That is how it works in theory, but as the reader discovers later; claiming is frowned upon due to those coming back typically hate those that claimed them.

Marcus is on a time-table, Neolistic Vampires have to find their soul mate or pass through a formal ritual into “true death”. Since seeing and being with Ellie, Marcus knows that Ellie is his true love. The feeling is mutual, with Ellie getting to the point that to be without Marcus is not be alive.

The two lovers grow to have a passionate bond, with Ellie wanting Marcus to claim her, to be completely his. Marcus on his part, does not wish this to happen, not willing to take her human life. Also, there are growing forces outside of the two lovers. Ellie discovers that she is a hunter of Evermores, which Marcus’s kind is called, and that her whole existence is to destroy them; On Marcus side, the powers that be, are against his loving Ellie and if the two attempt to remain together, both sides will attempt to destroy them!

REVIEW

This book had a dark, edgy lyrical feel to it….It flowed with a rhythmic charm, as Marcus and Ellie’s story was told. I enjoyed the dialogue at the beginning between the two lovers; the back and forth with Marcus egging and irritating Ellie. I also enjoyed how the author, with seemless effort was able to bridge the gap of a new meeting to passionate love without the reader going…”What?!”… The flow of the story was natural, and the concept was a fresh, unique twist on the traditional vampire theme.

There was an echo of Twilight meets Romeo&Juliet meets Hunger Games(Meaning the tough fighter chick:) but Pretty In Black is all its own. I was mesmerized with Marcus Marble, the author did a great job of keeping the reader’s interest, peaked for a good ways into the book, regarding what or who Marcus was; Ellie wasn’t the only one enthralled with him:)

I enjoyed the twist of learning Ellie’s destiny, that she was created with the whole purpose of destroying that which she loved!

This was a great first book in this series, and an awesome lead in to the fabulous Black Satin, the second book in the series! The adventure gets even better:)

So I recommend this book fully and come back on June 24th for the review of Black Satin and a fantastic character interview
