A Humbling Experience

Sometimes being an author is a humbling experience. A few years ago I received a letter from a lady in California requesting an autographed copy of one of my books. She wrote that she wanted it so she could give it to her father for Christmas. I don’t normally have copies of my books at my home. I let the publisher handle sales. However, for some reason I had a copy of this particular book, so I signed it and mailed it to California.

I couple of days later it struck that if the man was disappointed with the book it could ruin his Christmas. I worried about that for days. Happily, in early January I got a thank you card from him – his name was James – telling me how much he liked the book. When I read the card the WHEW! I exhaled could be heard from Tennessee to California.

I have always tried as hard as I could to produce quality work, but since that even, I have written as if someone’s Christmas depends on it. Because it just might.
