New versions of AWL1 stories

Two years ago, I wrote my first short story: ‘The Harbour’. This was quickly followed by another: ‘Changing Rooms’. Repackaged with two more shorts, the three book series, ‘A Woman’s Lust’, came into being.

I wrote those early books for fun, something to while away a winter’s night. About six months later, hopefully not attributable to a mid-life crisis, I realised I rather enjoyed the writing process. Determined to take creative writing seriously, I bought books and attended a couple of courses. Over the next few months the quality of my writing, in my opinion and hopefully yours, significantly improved.

The reason why I’m saying this, is because last week I had a stinker of a review: 1 star. I’ve never given a book a 1 star review. If it’s that bad I wouldn’t waste my time with it - I’ll put it down long before the end and erase it from my memory. The fact that somebody took the time to write the review, got me wondering - was it really justified? So, I went back and took a nose at those earlier titles. Sadly enough, while a single lonely unloved star is harsh, I had to admit, there was space for improvement. Quite a bit of space, in fact. A backyard, perhaps. Possibly a field.

In a way I found it reassuring that my writing has improved. I’m now writing full time, attending more course, reading more books, and I’m loving it. I’ll try and seek a conventional publishing deal for my next book and hopefully that will lead to great things. It’ll be tough I know. There’s some great talent out there all vying for the limited shelf space, but it’s something I feel passionate about and I want to give it a shot.

In the meantime, I couldn’t let that field lie fallow. I went back and gave those earlier titles a harsh bout of editing. The rejigged versions are currently in the process of being published - they should be live in the next few days. They read far better than before, and like an old friend, were fun to revisit. Hopefully, my current work will be able to stand on its own two feet in a couple of years time, and those 1 star reviews will be a thing of the past, something from before that writing bug truly took hold.
