WINTER 2016

FOUNDER’S NOTE

Janet Denlinger    Morgan Hare    Dr. Rod J. Rohrich

The AiRS Foundation grew out of a 40-year friendship between Janet Denlinger and Morgan Hare, women whose success in business motivated them to find a way to give back to our community. Since their skin care company, eraclea, was focused on helping women feel and look good, they were searching for a cause to which they could contribute that would help women with their self-esteem. To that end, they asked Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, the founding Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, to suggest ways he felt they could make a difference. He told them about the issues related to breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy, and that led to the beginning of establishing the AiRS Foundation.

Why I Do What I Do.
By: Alexes Hazen MD

Director of the NYU Aesthetic Center | AiRS Board Director

I remember the moment when I decided I wanted to become a plastic surgeon. I was a third-year medical student at Brown University School of Medicine doing a rotation in general surgery and had an ‘elective’ week in a sub-specialty. I didn’t know what plastic surgery was, but I chose that sub-specialty, and I was “scrubbed” into a breast…

Breast Cancer Patient Education Act

ASPS Secures passage of the Breast Cancer Patient Education Act

“This is a proud day for ASPS and all of our members who advocated on behalf of this important legislation.  Most importantly, it’s a victory for our patients, on whose behalf we continuously advocate.  ASPS has been working on the BCPEA for four years, and we are honored to have championed this much needed legislation that will inform patients about their federally mandated right to breast reconstruction.”

David Song, MD, MBA
ASPS President

THE STORY

Kathy Bates on Living with Lymphedema

“I had seen someone with lymphedema who didn’t take care of it, and the toxins were visibly oozing,” This was my experience with lymphedema. I wasn’t educated,
and I was terrified this would happen to me.  Doctors focus on the cancer, and they don’t really talk about lymphedema.” Kathy Bates

ENCOURAGING WORDS

“A great percentage of women undergoing breast cancer treatment are
unsure or unaware of their reconstruction options. We are dedicated to educating breast cancer survivors regarding their options and are raising funds and resources to help make reconstruction possible for everyone.”

Janet Denlinger

“Lessons learned:
Get EDUCATED…speak up for yourself and be assertive.

Reach out for help and allow people to help you…because people really do want to help.”

Susan Neumann, CA

“AiRS was my “second family” during treatment. I didn’t feel like a woman any more, you
don’t want to tell anyone you are missing a breast…it just totally changed my life.”
Shannon Howden, TX

“In addition to chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomy, reconstructive breast surgery is an integral part of cancer treatment — leading to a path toward emotional and physical healing. As leaders in a national movement for health and healing, let’s make sure that every woman who needs and wants reconstruction can afford it.”

Dr. Rod J. Rohrich
