Another Excerpt From Storms in The Distant North
“The work was quite futile in killing these things. Likely, they were coming through all over the world. Though his cautionary eyes never strayed from any headlines that could indicate otherwise, to his knowledge, a couple of isolated incidents were active, but the doorway or passage to this world appeared to be happening here. Like a medieval village beset by superstition only in this case, the superstition was real. Eerie events were occurring everywhere, but the people of the town confined their whispers to the late night taverns, the fireplaces and hushed conversations. Schoolchildren were aware that something was amiss and many created boogeymen tales began surfacing on the playgrounds. In these closely confined areas far from the reaches of the city, distrust of the government led to tales about possible chemical spills behind the mutated crops in the harvest and stillborn births of severely deformed fetuses. The chemical rumors were mainly to provide logical explanations that vanished when the sun set upon the horizon and the twilight hours of the night crept over the town. Talk of sinister things never said in the light of day began to emerge. Over another round of beers at Ryan’s tavern, accounts of shadowy figures lurking in the forgotten corners of rooms, along with strange lights and inexplicable noises flowed freely. Doors dead bolted and windows barred in a place where no one ever worried about crime. “
