Lance Wayland has a secret purpose for becoming Stanton Castle’s new smith. He and his three closest friends are the founding members of the Order of the Broken Blade, formed to blunt the power of King John, whose outrageous taxes and unjust laws have taken a toll on their country. To succeed, they need money and men, both of which they can get from the Earl of Stanton. Lance’s mission can only be waylaid by one thing—his interest in the earl’s lovely daughter.
Idalia knows better than to think she’ll be allowed to marry a smith. Yet Lance Wayland is the most compelling man she’s ever met, and their connection grows stronger each time they see each other.
Can Lance pursue the woman he loves without betraying the order to which he’s pledged his troth?
The Mercenary (Book 2)
A fake marriage is the last thing he wants . . . and the one thing he needs.
Guy Lavallais never expected to marry. But when a nun overhears him making treasonous overtures to a bishop, she makes a shocking ultimatum: marry her or she’ll tell all. And there is plenty to tell. Guy is a member of the Order of the Broken Blade, a brotherhood of knights seeking to tame King John. If the wrong person learns his secret, Guy will die a traitor’s death.
Of course, Lady Sabine isn’t a nun at all. She was brought to the abbey against her will, and she’ll do anything to escape. Even bribe a wickedly handsome mercenary, and the more time she spends with him, the more he awakens other passions.
Their pretend marriage begins to feel very real, but Guy’s mission for the order soon threatens both their arrangement and their very lives.
The Scot (Book 3)
He only cares about revenge. Until he meets her.
A widow after only one year of marriage, Lady Roysa chooses to run to her sister Idalia not realizing Idalia and her new husband have a secret—they are part of a rebellion against the king, as is their gruff host at Dromsley Castle.
The last thing Terric Kennaugh wishes for is a guest, let alone one who seems more concerned about fashion than the Order of the Broken Blade’s rebellion against King John. He won’t miss his chance at revenge, especially not by the poorly timed arrival of a pampered English miss. To his surprise, he soon finds himself warming toward Roysa, but love is a distraction he cannot afford if he is to have his revenge.
Dromsley Castle is about to become the first battleground in what promises to be an all-out war between the king’s men and the Order. Can love bloom in the midst of so much danger?
The Earl (Book 4)
Conrad Saint-Clair, Earl of Licheford, may have started a rebellion against the king, but he is powerless against the woman he loved and lost.
The Order of the Broken Blade finally has the support it needs to succeed. With their rebellion on the cusp of success—or utter failure—the last thing on Conrad’s mind is romance. Which is why he is completely blindsided when the only woman he’s ever loved, his friend’s sister, shows up on his doorstep.
Years ago, Cait Kennaugh was brutally attacked by a king’s man at the Tournament of the North. Her brother Terric and three other young men banded together to save her. Conrad, then a handsome earl’s son, wielded the sword that killed her attacker.
Fear drove Cait from the man she loves, and she’s desperate to reclaim him. But will the earl risk opening his heart to her again, while his rebellion hangs in the balance?

Fantastic Box Set. I have read all of these books as individual stories and am really glad that they have been brought together in one collection. You don’t want to miss this.
The Blacksmith: Order of the Broken Blade looks to be a great series. This is certainly a different way of treating the ‘King John’ era, the dissatisfaction of the Barons is more pronounced, especially when traitors and their families are severely punished. Idalia and Lance are brilliant characters who have had problems with their fathers in the past. The attraction between this couple starts almost from the time they meet each other. With secrets getting in the way of trust, can they reach for the stars and succeed in having a future together.
The Mercenary: What a fun way to start the book. I thought Sabine was quite inspired during her first introduction to Guy. Their mission sometimes seems to go awry, and their relationship fluctuates quite often. This wonderful storyline grabbed my interest from the beginning and just kept getting better
The Scot: This well-developed, exciting storyline gives us more of an insight into King John and his methods of ruling England. The outcome of his betrayal of at least one of the Barons, leads to a surprise for Terric. Roysa gets off to a bad start with Terric when she arrives at his castle looking for her sister, but it doesn’t take long for her feelings to be captured by this strong Highlander. This wonderful book, kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next.
The Earl: What a wonderful ending to this series. This author has interspersed history with fiction to create a realistic tale of the origin of the ‘Magna Carta’. Cait’s tale is told in this book, but it can never be a standalone, as her troubles began the ‘Order’. Our four couples are brought together in this story, each in their own way, helping Cait come to terms with her past. Conrad is a true leader and by the end of the book, he is even beginning to believe it himself. This has been a great series.
I previously read and reviewed all the books in this boxset, and experienced a spark of excitement when each new novel came out. Four men bound together by one traumatic event, stand together to gather support to change the laws of the land. Set against the backdrop of Medieval England on the border between England and Scotland, this author draws the reader into four powerful romances with all the tension and unrest that prevailed in that era. My interest was piqued on more than one occasion and I found myself hitting Google to discover more about the history of the time.
The Blacksmith: Lance Wayland makes a wonderful strong, silent hero, whilst feisty, kindhearted Idalia wins one over immediately. Despite the difference in their stations, one can only root for Lance and Idalia, trusting that they will get their chance at love, even though protocol dictates otherwise.
The Mercenary: The irrepressible Guy Lavallais fears nothing and no one, but when a nun at the abbey where he has a secret meeting overhears his conversation, Guy is appalled not only that she had eavesdropped, but also at her outrageous demands. Despite having determined never to marry, Guy discovers himself before a priest saying his vows, but when the drab little nun removes her habit he is completely taken aback by her vibrancy and beauty. What started as a marriage of convenience, becomes a partnership in more ways than one.
The Scot: This book draws the reader in from the opening pages as Lady Roysa receives the news that her despised husband has died. However, the news is delivered in a manner that makes her realise that there is more at stake than she is able to determine. Making a split-second decision, Roysa leaves her home, forfeits her claim to her inheritance, and goes to her sister who is visiting at Dromsley Castle. She has to rethink her choices at her first encounter with the clan Chief, Terric Kennaugh when sparks fly with animosity for one another. Forced into one another's company in the cold winter months at the Castle, they begin to discover another force at play as anger evolves into attraction. Taking his responsibilities seriously, Terric doesn't have time to play the courtship game. He has his revenge to plot and his vows to keep, but Roysa keeps unsettling him and making him rethink about what is really important.
The Earl: One forgets when sitting in a history class, that real men and women were responsible for all the changes that have taken place in society throughout the ages, whether it be opposing an ignoble King, the abolition of slavery, or allowing women to vote. This well-written novel brings to the fore the effort it took and the sacrifices made to win the necessary support to bring about change in the lead-up to the signing of the Magna Carta. The plot encompasses both adventure and romance but also brings enlightenment and understanding of an era that is buried in the mists of time. An attack on Cait Kennaugh resulted in the four young men who came to her defense making a binding oath that followed them through to adulthood. Conrad, Earl of Licheford fell in love that day and has never been able to forget Cait, just she has never been able to forget Conrad or get over the fact that she was partially responsible for the events that took place. Cait finally shores up the courage to go south with her brother, determined to face Conrad and tell him how she feels. Once they come face to face, it becomes evident to all that Conrad and Cait have a history and explanations are necessary.
I loved all the characters in these books, each of which is a standalone, and the whole series comes to a an exciting conclusion in the final book of the series. I received a copy of this boxset as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This series "Order of the Broken Blade" by Cecelia Mecca tells about four friends who have kept a secret from their youth and now are adding more secrets as they decide to do something about King John's high taxes on Lords who are struggling to care for their people and land. But in order to go against the King, they need the support of some powerful Lords' men and money. First up is Lance who has the trade ofB lacksmith. He arrives at Lord Stanton's Castle to replace the Blacksmith who passed away but he did not plan on a beautiful distraction in the form of the Earl's daughter Idalia. A romance between these two is unthinkable!
Similarly, the Frenchman Sir Guy Lavallais meets with a Bishop to persuade him to use his treasure to support a revolt against cruel King John. The Order of the Blade needs coin to buy off the French mercenary army the king has camped on English soil to threaten his own barons. Lady Sabine overhears the handsome knight and blackmails him to help her escape the abbey and marry her so that her deceased father's overlord can not force her back into the abbey. Guy changes his plans and leaves with her, rides all night, arriving at another small convent in the morning where an elderly priest he knows marries them. This is another great romance by Mecca: Guy and Sabine are enigmas to each other, think they have life plans that will make short work of this marriage, but after lots of adventure each finds a true calling they never dreamed of in their life with one another!
In the third book, we find Roysa running in the cold from her wicked brother-in-law after he reports her husband has been killed in an accident. But rumor has it that Walter was killed by his brother for sleeping with his brother's wife, which Roysa has every reason to believe. She arrives at Castle Dromsley where her sister, Idalia, and husband are staying with the Scotsman, Earl Terric Kennaugh, also a member of the Order. The pages flip swiftly as Lord Terric and Lady Roysa both have excellent reasons to scoff at attractive members of the opposite sex but eventually come to enjoy each others' company. When Roysa gets a kiss, she begins to believe there is pleasure to be found in marriage, but secret missions cause separation and sorrow, and war causes death.
Conrad Saint-Clair, Earl of Licheford, is shocked when Lady Cait rides through his gate with her brother, Terric. He has not seen her but the one time she came with her family to the Tournament of the North and was saved by four young teenagers from a rape attempt by a king's man. Conrad's broken blade was the instrument that he used to kill the man. The four became close friends and now have formed The Order of the Broken Blade to lead the rebellion against evil King John. Along with 20 other barons they have presented their demands and now await Spring to force the King to deal with them. Now when he has this rebellion to co-ordinate, 14 years after he last saw Kate and fell in love with her, she finally comes to him. This book tells how he manages to act honorably while leading a rebellion and romancing his woman. A great series leading to the signing of the Magna Carta in 1212.
4 Books All Worthy Of 5 Stars A wonderful series that will not disappoint you, I can't get enough of this authors stories. I bought each of these books and read all of these books before they became a set so this set is a real bargain that I highly recommend.
#1. The Blacksmith: 5 Stars Short But Packed With An Epic Romance Story A good start to a new series of 4 books. A short book but a wonderful read. I loved all of the characters and the plot which will continue through the series. This book is a complete story with no cliff hangers. To get the full impact you would want to read all 4 books. The romance had just the right amount of intimate pleasures and steaminess for me. Intimate rating very warm. The story moved at a fast pace with no dull moments. I highly recommend this story if you like a well written steamy romance story.
#2.The Mercenary: 5 Stars Extremely Thrilling and Dangerous Romance Story Truly an enjoyable and exciting story with fabulous characters. Stunning romance heat level high. Interesting plot and several dangerous situations that kept me glued until I finished this story. The danger does continue throughout the series. The ending started to be so involved with the rebellion that I was glad to reach Guy and Sabine's happy ending. I can hardly wait until I have read all 4 books so there is hopefully a really good happy ever after for all of these characters.
#3. The Scot: 5 Stars He Meant To Court Her Slowly But.... Another winning story with great characters and the plot continues and thickens. These books have been hard to put down and there is still 2 more to go. This author knows how to write romance encounters that make your own heart skip a beat. Steamy romance and a dangerous mission. Very exciting with a few twists here and there.
#4. The Earl: 5 Stars They Were Meant To Save Each Other Another terrific story to add to the series. Romance at it's best continues with this determined couple. Each know what they have wanted for along time and now is the time to make it happen. Fast paced enough that I could read it in one day. These are not lengthy books. The epilogue was so touching and I hated to see the books end. They were so enjoyable. The final intimate romance scene after the marriage was well done. I highly recommend this series
I read each of these books as they came out. Since then, I have re-read them a couple of times. As usual Cecelia Mecca’s writing makes you feel like you are actually there looking on. Really love this series.
