Plopsy I absolutely agree with you. I actually didn't finish 'The Cuckoo's Calling' because it was so boring and incredibly slow. The detail was too much and was a total turn off.

Indu Som Absolutely correct . I am a big fan of J K Rowling , having enjoyed the Harry Potter series and all its appendages , as well as , The Casual Vacancy , very much . So I bought the entire Cormoran Strike series on trust . And was sadly disappointed . Firstly , I am not sure whether this is ultimately meant to be a suspense or a romance series . The personal lives of the two detectives intrude too much into the plot and contribute nothing to the progress of the story . A long paragraph about the dining hall of Hogwarts or the interior of the Enchanted Forest is a paragraph well spent , because it takes us to a magical world that is new to us , but four sentences about dug up streets and the interior of underground trains are four sentences too many if they have nothing to do with the crime or its detection . And I am sick of the repetitive descriptions of Strike's flat , his difficulty in walking fast , Lucy's family and Mathew's character . I have a decent memory and don't need these to be dinned into me in almost every chapter in every book . Lastly being an avid reader of the crime and suspense genre , I like abundant clues and a step by step analysis of the mystery . A sudden epipahny which reveals all to the detective comes in every book as a major anticlimax .
In all these books , too many words have been wasted in creating unnecessary scenes and atmospheres which have no bearing on the crime or its solution . In fact , the actual mystery , clues , analysis and final denouement takes up very little space in the book . Strike and Robin are so busy thinking about each other that one wonders when they have time to think about the problems of their clients . In fact , so far , the series reads more like a romance progressing in Adagio than like a thriller . I do hope that Rowling will once a gain cast her magic spell and all these unnecessary paragraphs will tie in and make sense in the end . Otherwise this will have been an enormous waste of effort for the author and the readers .
