Mitali Yes, exactly. Poirot realized that even murder can be justifiable in certain extreme circumstances. That's why he helped cook up the alternative 'explanation' that would point towards a completely unknown person entering and leaving the train, thus leaving all the known passengers in the clear.

Mrs Froggy I agree. Anyway, I was kind of incredulous when they decided not to prosecute. I read the book in german (not my mother tongue) and I read the passage twice, thinking that I misunderstood something.
