I really like your take on this. I hadn't thought about Werner only living because the diamond needed him to save Marie-Laure. That's kind of beautiful. And I agree that the guilt would have ruined him had he survived. Especially since he sensed all along that what he was doing was wrong.
As I read your comment John, on the diamond needed him to live, it occurred to me that this was a very mild interlacing of the novels Marie-Laure was reading.
That's a good point. I was so upset that Werner died. But would his life had been if he'd survived? Full of guilt and remorse.
