That would make sense--the world can be dark and miserable in such a way that we need to escape to another one--one that has trials and troubles of its own, but also at which we can sigh with happiness at the end! :-)
I agree Jody and thank you for that! I read books to be in my "happy space" and after reading 300+ books, you are the one who does that the best!
Hedlund and the other commenters are correct. Romance novels are nearly all HEA. If you would like a more bittersweet/nuanced/"realistic" ending, try women's fiction or historical fiction. There are some great stories in those categories that often have romance but as romance is not the focus, you'll find stories with more complicated endings. Not bleak conclusions necessarily, but also not stories where all the plot threads are neatly and prettily tied up. I prefer these myself, but have enjoyed a couple of Hedlund's books when I'm in the mood for HEA. :)
I agree, we see enough of evil, sadness, and sin in life...and tho God will turn all things to good in the future, I don't read to burden my heart with more pain, sorrow and unhappy endings. Please continue as you do. I am sure the person who wrote asking you that question, IF that is REALLY the ending they are looking for, can find authors who do indeed add to an unhappy ending. In fact, that is why I am a Christian...life has lots of sorrows, but the ending with the Lord, will be happy ever after!
