Sergey Selyutin BTW, there is a rather old Russian fiction book called "Elephants of Hannibal" which (among other things) tells the story of Sophonisba. What I like about the book was a refreshing depiction of Publius Cornelius Scipio - he is shown as a canny and unscrupulous military leader, contrary to how Polybius and Titus Livius depict him. Then again, Polybius totally depended on Scipio's family, and Livius' writings border on fiction, so a bit of revisionism doesn't hurt.

Rob Edmunds Thanks Sergey. I wasn't aware of that book. I'll have to see if I can find a copy in translation. Quite a few writers have written about Sophonisba, including Voltaire, who wrote a play about her called Sophonisbe. I would say I have characterized Scipio in my books as a rather canny figure but one who retained a few scruples here and there and a sense of honour. I quite like the way Polybius, who met Masinissa late in the King's life, describes him. He referred to him as "the best man of all the kings of our time."
