I don't picture solitary fishermen drinking for some reason. Instead I picture men getting together with like-minded men for some peer approval drinking away from wives. The stereotype is that the wives understand the men's time because they have women's time, but it isn't quite the same. I have to say I don't fit the stereotypes at all.
I am no wife myself but we occasionally go fishing in the summer with the partner for life. A very, very tedious enterprise - I equip myself with a book, phone, headphones, food, water for coffee and prepare to sit down in the same spot for hours (the spot may be a horrible affair too). Even on a boat the general elements remain unchanged. As far as I can tell, casual fishing is meant to kill some time away from whatever you want to be away from. If it is the wife... the strategy will quickly be uncovered by the enemy and doubtless there will be repercussions. Sadly, there is nothing engaging in "fishing", so even if you don't mind the wife coming along there is little to offer her.
addition to the previous comment: I see the allure of drinking while fishing. Or just drinking.
Whereas kayaking is, on the contrary, en excellent way to spend time with your wife.

When I first read the fishing opening of Penric's Fox, I was reminded that in the opening segment of Penric's Demon, when Penric was on the way to his betrothal, he was thinking it was a "better day for fishing", and seemed to feel he would rather have been fishing than in his best clothing for a betrothal feast.
Fishing is a whole lot of sitting around waiting, with brief periods of intense action. That reminds me of a saying about the military, amusingly enough. At any rate, all of that sitting around waiting for a fish to bite lends itself well to hanging out with people (my wife doesn't like fishing or boating in general, but my brother-in-law and his wife and 3 kids often go out with me and my 4 kids) or alcohol (in our group, only on the rare occasions when it is men-only) to help the time pass.
If you're not catching anything there's a good chance you don't have the right equipment, which makes the "tedious enterprise" (as @Brzk described it) a whole lot more satisfying.
I am in Minnesota as well, as Lois mentioned it's part of the culture here.
