Don't forget they were all destined for the military! Also, don't forget this was an elite school which took a lot of competition or string-pulling to get a place.
Even the instructors disappeared, one assumes not to 'a safe place in the Nazi war machine'. Many of the cadets' fathers were casualties, I think the school was not a way of getting a cushy bunk, it was a developer of the legendary Germany soldier, sort of like in Sparta.
