Have a search at Bosun's chair for the general look of something like Lois described. You can also look up block and tackle to get an idea of why you might use multiple pulleys with one or more in concert. If you're going to lift your own weight along with someone else, the block and tackle makes it much more reasonable. It's all tech that's very much appropriate to the world Pen & Des live in but it would be viewed much like most people look at cell phones today.
@ Scott -- Yes, Bosun's chair was what I was thinking. I also have a childhood memory of my grandfather pulling a dock out of a lake and up a steep incline onto his lawn by hand, by himself, using an arrangement of multiple pulleys and ropes.

@Lois, Thanks! I figured from your description. Then again, it's one of the reasons why I love reading your work - I've always found that I "get" your descriptions and patterns of thought easily. Anyway, it's amazing what a block and tackle can do. Many people have no idea how much of a difference they can make, then again many of those same people also have no idea how big a difference a level can make too. I can totally picture your grandfather but I'm a guy who has moved a small building over by myself with a 12' steel pipe.
