Thank you so much Larissa for passing my comment on to Val Windsor and thank you Val for being kind enough to reply . I thought that might be the answer but then thought Maybe I was missing another answer. I like subtle endings but usually know someone else who has read the same book who I can have an interesting conversation with to discuss it. I picked this book up at a charity shop and I so enjoyed it that I had to have that final answer to the ending. Many thanks to you both.
