Erin Thank you, Rick Riordan, for writing this and responding to this reader the way you did to make them think about their own perspective more deeply. You're honestly my favorite author, and this just added to my love for you- not just because of your work but for who you are as a person. As an LGBT+ person, thank you for representing us in your books. Thank you for acknowledging us and providing us with strong characters to look up to. Thank you for giving us a home in your words.

message 2: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Hubsky Thank you for responding the way you did because it doesn't bring awareness to that one commenters and doesn't really give them the platform you took and formed a different narrative and I think that is important. It is so important to me how diverse you make your casts, it's something that made me so joyful. When I first read Nico's entrance I loved him, and it created a great space for everyone. If I have kids this is defintely a story I want them to read. Reading makes us empathetic to others of those backgrounds and it's an important piece of our lives.

sadie This was written so beautifully and respectfully, thank you for being such an amazing author and person. I'm a huge fan of your work, and Nico is an awesome character!! He's perfect just the way he is, and i'm so grateful that he's been able to help LGBTQ+ kids feel included. Again, thank you!!

message 4: by Mariana (new)

Mariana Another reason you've always been one of my favorite authors and why I've always respected you so much. Thank you for your words!

message 5: by K.C. (new)

K.C. Nicola As a transgender and non-heterosexual person who finds a great amount of comfort in books, I extol your thoughtful and meticulous approach to the reader's comment, Rick. Thank you.

message 6: by Bethany (new)

Bethany This is one of the greatest, most thoughtful responses I've ever seen. Thank you for being an ally.

message 7: by Nina (new)

Nina Julian Personally, I don't think you should hate a character just because they're gay. Nico is such an amazing character with layers and a beautiful backstory. He shows growth throughout the book series and has become an icon. Just because it is written that he like other guys doesn't change who he is.

message 8: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah I absolutely love this response Mr. Riordan.

message 9: by elsa (new)

elsa What an eloquent response. Thank you, not only for this very respectful comment, but for helping others see themselves in books.

message 11: by Heather (new)

Heather Such a beautiful response! Nico is one of my favorite characters for multiple reasons and I'm sure many people can empathize with his journey. Thank you for including diverse characters and encouraging and uplifting the quiet voices who may be overlooked or drowned out.

message 12: by Alex (new)

Alex Fogg Why are some people always bothered with Nico being gay? It's not like you made it his entire personality, just a trait he has, plus Nico is a very positive representation!!

message 13: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Rick Riordan ally REAL! Thank you for this so meaningful, mature, and well-put response. Straight allies and activists give me hope that maybe there is a chance of acceptance.

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth absolute champion rick riordan being one of the most moral, compassionate and caring authors out there

message 15: by Carrie (new)

sahana this is why we love you so much

message 19: by Viyaaa (new)

Viyaaa Uncle Rick writing about Nico was probably my first experience of the LGBTQ community. At first, when I read about Nico liking Percy and Will, I felt kinda weird about it. How can a guy like a guy? I guess I was just so surprised by it that I didn't know how to react properly, especially since I grew up with the ideology of man+woman. Riordan's work introduced me to a whole new world of love. It wasn't until I was 15 that I properly figured out my own sexual orientation (bisexual) and I honestly have to thank the Percy Jackson series for that development of my life. I don't think I could've gotten here without it. I'm still learning how to balance such a big part of me (how tf do I come out??) and I hope one day that we'll all be accepted and loved, no matter who we love or are.

message 20: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Beautifully said, sir.

message 21: by Rory o.0 (new)

Rory o.0 I love this so much! Thank you so much for being such an amazing and supportive author and person

message 22: by Alex (new)

Alex This is how to be a great ally! It gets so exhausting to justify your own existence to others and finding the words to describe why you deserve to have rights can be challenging, Such a great response and exactly how a cis-het person with a platform ought to respond <3

message 23: by booksbydorothea (new)

booksbydorothea Beautifully said and written! Thank you for all that you do!!

message 30: by Dallana (new)

Dallana Rodriguez es la mejor respuesta que leí, por eso eres de mis escritores favoritos.

message 31: by aylin ᯓ★ (new)

aylin ᯓ★ It's true that we don't accept LGBT+ in Islam but we also should respect them. Take it as another religion; we don't agree with their views but we still talk to them like humans. Respect is important

message 32: by Laine (new)

Laine This response made me so happy. Everyone deserves respect, and not many people are willing to give that. The fact that one of my favorite authors is not only an ally and an amazing person, but truly knows how to look from all sides and respect someone no matter what makes my heart happy. I think this has given me a reminder to respect and treasure everyone, because we are all only here for a limited amount of time. Thank you, Rick Riordan, for being an ally, an inspiration, and a respectful person. I will forever be thanking you honestly. Respect to everyone out there, share your love!

message 33: by Penelope (new)

Penelope Berkeley BOOM MIC DROP UNCLE RICK. I think this was a great response to that comment. :)) Yesss everything you said Laine.

message 34: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Reji Rick Riordan has earned a different level of respect from me. This answer is just so accurate. This response made me happy

message 35: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel Zimmerman ( sound of audience clapping)

message 36: by Lillian (new)

Lillian I don't lime the fact that Nico's gay because I always wanted Nico to have a really cool life and become like some cool but also scary guy that doesn't give a flip about whats happening around him.Or for him to marry Ryna.Lol.

message 37: by Lillian (new)

Lillian * Like

message 38: by Joan (new)

Joan While I’m dubious Rick Riordan will ever read this, I want to thank you for the sympathetic way you answered this person’s comment about not liking gay people. You might have made him rethink this! Thank you from straight woman!

message 39: by Zoie (new)

Zoie Rick, you probably won't read this, but I love the way you defend others, even if who they are is not something you can relate to. Thanks for all the amazing queer rep in your stories.

message 40: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Knox Thank you for this Rick! This is one of the many reasons you are my favorite author! As an agender demi-pansexual, this is so much appreciated

message 41: by N (new)

N Even though I'm sure this probably won't be read, but I want to thank you for answering this comment so kindly by just explaining, not debilitating or looking down upon them. And I want to continue thanking you for including all the representation in your books; as autistic, trans nonbinary, and aromantic asexual (among other things), it is often so hard to find representation, especially accurate rep in books that isn't done cheaply or just to throw something in there. I love so much how all your representation is so wholesome, but also raw and accurate. Again, I just want to thank you for being a true role model for people of all ages. Thank you Uncle Rick!

message 42: by Kermit_Crossing (new)

Kermit_Crossing Reading this made me feel so accepted! I love your view on this! Nico is an amazing character also(He's my favorite)
