Monica Yes he did. He chose not to throw the water, knowing the consequences. He was brave, but not brave enough to defy his mother.

Mary Ellen The Hitler Youth was the organization that two boys in the orphanage (and a lot of other German children) belonged to. The school was an elite school and his attendance and success there could have added to the family's prestige and furthered his father's career. (IIRC, there is a reference to the latter in the book.)

David Yohalem "naturalist in the vein of Audubon or even Darwin" - both of whom wantonly killed birds in order to study them. Perhaps he was more like the great romantic naturalists Alexander von Humbolt or Goethe. :-)
