I'm guessing parents thought he'd be protected in the school and couldn't absorb the absurd insanity of their time. I think you mean "how sneaky the NAZIs were", not the Germans.
Frederick and his mother were still alive near the end of the book. There was a little scene with them.
....and they said his mother was a widow, so his father died during the war.
Thank you so much..missed some important details on the audio version of book.
He was mentioned again, although their residence was destroyed. He lived alone with his mother, drooling and drawing spirals at least until 1974.
