I thought Martha Dodd was one of the main characters in BEASTS. I also appreciated all the female passengers you brought to life in DEAD WAKE. I suppose you can only write about the people who left behind enough material to be included in your books.
A suggestion on the "African-American theme" you might find interestingis William Johnson, born a slave in Natchez, Mississippi, became emancipated at age 10 or 11, and subsequently became an upright citizen of the city, and a landholder of several businesses and farms. He also became a slaveholder....
