Ah, I was wondering if the commodified cryonics contract scheme was perhaps inspired by Gogol's Dead Souls. Great minds just think alike, it appears!
No, in a very loose way it came in part from reading The Smartest Men in the Room. And in part from decades of other more direct human observation. (Which, I suppose, Gogol also had.)
