Jessica, I think he shows how war took what we can assume were good and decent people to very bad and low levels.
The author got this wrong. These men did not rape for revenge. They raped their way across eastern Europe. They raped Hungarian, Chech, Yugoslav ans Polish women. When they got to Germany they raped Jewish women. They also raped thousands of their own women prisoners who were sent to Germany as forced labor. They continued to rape them until Stalin had them sent home. They were warned to say nothing about what had happened to them. These men were animals and that is how they behaved. Some American raped women but very few by comparison.

The Nazis did terrible things but it did not justify what the Soviets did. - what, freed the world at the time when Americans rushed in at the end of the war and claimed the victory? How conveniently you have been rewriting world history to suit your American agenda and justify what you did in Afganistan, Vientam, Iraq, Syria and other country that has natural resources. REAL people understand war has no nationality, it's the face of the people who kill. I have heard of American soldiers raping women in Iraq and going to work, getting the drone out, bombing the whole village - children, babies, old people, women and all, peaceful population, then going home to fancy home in safety and having dinner like nothing ever happened.
