Carol I would add that the decision to run out of a building depends on the building codes in the earthquake country. In places like Southern California, where I used to live, people were trained to take cover inside during an earthquake

Somewhat further south, buildings of unreinforced masonry needed to be promptly evacuated. People from there were trained to head out the doors as soon as shaking began.

Bebe My godmother was in a restaurant in Venice when an earthquake hit and she told me all the waiters and locals left immediately, and only the tourists were left sitting inside.
