Misty I love you Josh Lanyon <3

message 2: by Josh (new)

Josh ;-)

Linda ~ they got the mustard out! ~ I wonder if this is the same one who was whining on Amazon. Too coincidental.

message 4: by *Bohemian* (new)

*Bohemian* Oh man... Why do ppl still go on and on about this. It's all about the quality of work the author puts out, not the gender behind it. Good for you Josh.

message 5: by Haldis (new)

Haldis You should probably go with the branding, just in case you forget to put on your armband....

message 6: by Ajax1978 (new)

Ajax1978 I love you Preston :-)

message 7: by Ty (new)

Ty Woot. Go Preston!

message 8: by Felice (new)

Felice Stevens you're a woman? GASP! The horrors!!

message 9: by Tex Reader (new)

Tex Reader Wow, Good question, Preston. Insensitive reply, Josh. I know all this dust up about your gender can get tiring, Altho it shouldn't matter, in reality it does to some, and others are just curious. And if it doesn't matter as you say, why go to lengths to neutralize it - why? because maybe you realize it does matter. I've really liked your stories, but this sarcastic reply to an honest question implies a lack of respect for diversity (as in diverse opinions, even if we disagree). I've decided to not follow Josh anymore on GR as well as her writing. I know, no big deal; but sorry, this crossed the line.

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela Benedetti All that should matter to readers is whether we like the fiction or not. Making a special effort to ensure everyone knows you're a woman doesn't make any sense. Maybe writers should all post dossiers in multiple public places online, listing their sex, their gender presentation, their sexual orientation, their race, their size, their medical history, their religion...?

Seriously, the only thing that's anyone's business here, unless a writer freely chooses to share it, is what their fiction is about and where readers can find it. And I for one am not going to blame Josh for getting a little snarky when faced with someone who's being all pushy and entitled about her personal info.

message 11: by Pam (new)

Pam I love the books but felt deceived when I found out the author was female. Was her reply to the question appropriate...no. Did I find it offensive....you bet. It certainly lowered my opinion of the author down to basement level. I bought my first Lanyon books when I still had a Fictionwise ereader so it's been a few years. I did make an effort to find out it the authors of the books were as their pen names indicated and everything on Josh seemed deliberately vague (gender neutral) Not as bad as some whose bio used male pronouns but still not forthcoming. Does it mean I won't buy the books now...probably not but I won't be jumping to buy them like I used to.

message 12: by Misty (new)

Misty 'Mermaid Murders' is available, Yay!!!!

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren You know, I think when I read Preston’s question I did a double take. And Tex obviously gave the guy the benefit of the doubt saying the question was innocent. I dunno, to me, it lost any innocence by being asked in a public forum – clearly marking it as an attempt at stirring the pot…and that sucks. So with that in mind it deserved the smack down it got. Seriously, dude, you’re going to tangle verbally with the creator of Kit and Adrien? And I certainly admit I’m always curious about the authors I like and admire – want to know more about them. But what they share about themselves is their choice and I respect that. I’m just happy getting to read their stories. Josh Lanyon, Suki Fleet, Mary Calmes, Bart Yates, Rhys Ford, Amy Lane, Alexa Land, Nick Wilgus, Adrienne Wilder – male or female I don’t care – you create wonderful worlds and characters.

message 14: by Lee (new)

Lee There was nothing 'innocent' about Preston's question, it was simply a provocative way of flogging a dead horse. Why does any author owe it to you to declare their gender and why should it matter? We're reading an author's books, not dating them. Get over yourselves.

message 15: by Silencio (new)

Silencio Wow so many misogynists on here. wtf.

message 16: by Katie (new)

Katie Johnson Dear, Preston, your bio doesn't mention you're an asshole. I guess we don't always put on our bios things that are public knowledge?

message 17: by Aurora (new)

Aurora Why are you calling him an asshole? I didn't know that Josh Lanyon is female. Her gender doesn't effect her jobs' quality. But it still nice to know that. 'Cause we just don't imagine the charecters' physical appereance in the books which she created but also hers too since she is so active with her readers.

message 18: by Ajumi (new)

Ajumi I actually always thought of Josh Lanyon as male (whenever I for example spoke about the author), I just assumed from the name. I only realized I was mistaken on that account as I read the blog of another author who complained about that fact, that she didn't know about her being female and how that had disappointed her.
I was really surprised! Not only because of these news, but also because this author was really angered. I couldn't understand her reasoning. Although I always assumed Josh Lanyon was male, I never heard (or read) her proclaiming she was male. Of course, I also didn't hear that she was female, but I also didn't actively look for it. I love her books (some more than others), they are beautifully written and rich of emotion. I don't need to know the gender of an author to enjoy their work. I would probably be a bit disappointed if an author deliberately told a lie in that regard, but just being vague and neutral? Leave the authors their privacy if they want to have it.
I also don't tell my gender on every site I'm on. If I publish a story there is no impressum which states clearly "This was written by... age... female". It can be there, but it doesn't have to. I never much thought about having to make my gender obvious if I didn't have to. Why are you all complaining? I'm sorry I really don't get it.
For me, in my opinion, I don't care if Josh Lanyon is female of male. She is usually very friendly in replies, takes time for her fans and writes incredible books. That's enough for me. I still love her work and I'll still buy the books I'm interested in. My interest isn't diminished just because the author is female, I know many great female authors and it really doesn't make a difference to me.
PS: Thank you for all the great books you've written ^-^

message 19: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Chesterbrook You go, girl...er...person whose gender does not matter because your work speaks for itself. Well, don't that just roll off the tongue! '^)

message 20: by M (new)

M It is no one's duty to tell anyone what their gender is, let alone to have to expend one drop of energy making sure they've done it 'right'.

message 21: by Missjoanie (new)

Missjoanie Give over. Either you like Josh's books or you don't. There are more serious things in life to get all twisted about. Next you will be fussing about ethnicity, nationality, age and more! Someone can write a good tale or they can't. I don't even have to like them.
Josh, thank for many pleasurable hours of reading and may there many more to come.

message 22: by Angela (new)

Angela Benedetti Aurora -- there's a difference between "nice to know" and "entitled to know." Preston is acting like they're entitled to know, and Josh has harmed them in some way by not putting her gender front and center. Come on, you know that's ridiculous. Preston is either an entitled idiot or a troll.

message 23: by SamSpayedPI (new)

SamSpayedPI Right . . . and that awful George Eliot! How dare they!?

In other news, we were all pleased to learn that Time magazine named Evelyn Waugh among the one hundred best-read female authors.

message 24: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe Sean The picture on the Scribd author page for Josh Lanyon when I joined a few months ago showed a man, a picture that can be found on Google Images, along with a bunch of other men named Josh Lanyon, but I remember the one that was on Scribd very well, it's the first one on Google Images. Now, the author photo on Scribd is a humorous photo of a guy with the caption 'You've been punked'. I'm so disappointed. Everywhere anyone ever wrote about Josh Lanyon being a man, the author never corrected it or mentioned 'and by the way I'm a woman'. Also, Ms. Killian, didn't your Josh Lanyon bio here on Goodreads read Male before you decided to put it gender neutral? I seem to recall it did, although I could be mistaken.

message 25: by Juli (new)

Juli Why do we care? Authors are allowed their pen names, this is nothing new. Their job is to get you to use your imagination and take you to a place that doesn't exist. They can be anyone they want. Don't care M,F, sexuality, skin color, religion, just keep putting out great books. Thank you Josh for many hours of wandering through your world.

message 26: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe Sean I do care, because I really thought this person was a man, I've been following and reading Josh Lanyon for years, have treated his/her book on writing 'Man Oh Man' like a bible, have seen a picture of a man on his/her author page on scribd and frankly, I feel duped and cheated. Silly me. Lots of other writers that I know of have chosen male surnames probably in the hopes of selling more books and who cares, really. But I really feel Josh Lanyon went through A LOT of trouble to make us think she's a man. And now it blew up in her face. I haven't anyone disappoint so many people other than Josh Lanyon so far. I usually don't give a damn one way or the other. But this time, it feels wayy out of line. And Josh's answer to the initial question for this thread is just so lame. So rude.

message 27: by Lulu (new)

Lulu OMG you're a woman? I never googled or searched I just assumed Josh is a man. I guess I didn't really care *giggles*

message 28: by Julz (new)

Julz I figured that copyright would turn problematic.

message 29: by Toni (new)

Toni LOL You and me, both, LuLu. Didn't have a clue and all I care about is when the next book is coming out!! Love your books Josh, be you man or woman!!!

message 30: by Anna (new)

Anna Well, I sure don't give a rats ass.... just as I never look up bands and other artists, because looks are not as important as the art itself
