Adoptive mothers can breastfeed now - suckling stimulates lactation. Drugs help, providing you take them in advance to get the hormones in line. They probably have more efficient drugs for it in the Vorkosiverse, though, something specially developed.
Thanks for the reply! My husband and I got a good chuckle out of the "poor beleaguered parent" bit - so true. (But then again, we're still sleep deprived...)
Breast feeding supposedly transfers pathogens from the baby into the mother by way of the breast, so the mother's immune system creates antibodies which then present in the breast milk to bolster the baby's immune system. Vat milk would not confer this benefit...
It could do at least as well at providing antibodies as current technology does with, for example, flu shots. They don't get everything, but they definitely help. (In response to Andrew's comment.)
I agree with Andrew regarding antibodies and vaccines being different. However, Andrew, no one said you couldn't grow your own breast milk at home. A sample of baby's spit for the machine prior to it producing the milk, perhaps?
My wife who is pregnant daily begs me to invent a Uterine Replicator.....or develop the abilities of a male seahorse to carry children.
She is pregnant daily? No wonder she wants a uterine replicator! =P Sorry to tease, couldn't resist. But I hear you, my wife would also like one. She tells me that carrying the next one is my responsibility if she doesn't get a replicator.
