The stone would give the keeper eternal life, but those around them prematurely die, is the legend. Many prematurely die in the story anyway, of war. The author raises the myth, as the truth of war is too hard to stomach, and the story gives some an opportunity to act better than those around them and redeem themselves

Wendy Forte MAYBe that's why Marie was 100 yrs old at the end of the book, she NEVER got rid of the stone, she never dropped it in the ocean.

Holly I agree that he carried it away and lost it when he was killed by the land mine. I think it waits in the field to continue its evil (?) path just as it did in the past. It is a tragic ending for Werner, whom I wanted to survive.
If, as suggested above, it represents war, greed, violence, etc., it will never disappear entirely; it will always be ready to rise again. The real question is why Marie-Laure was able to possess it without suffering evil consequences like the other owners did. Why can't I mark this comment as having spoilers?
