Writing this way seems both wonderfully free (spontaneous as you write) and at risk of loosing the main story from all that happens to the characters. Do you need to review and rewrite or can you keep going the direction your stories are taking you?
Thank you for saying this. In pretty much all my writing groups I'm told that plotting is the way to go, but somehow plotting seems to rob me of my spontaneity. Looking forward to your next book!
I absolutely love that you said this, because it is exactly the way I like to write. I like to see where the story and characters take me.
This is fun to hear, given that this was a lot like how my book was written. It was just as much a surprise and an unfolding to me as I think it is for readers. It certainly makes creative writing FUN (very different than the professional non-fiction writing I do, which does require outlining and so on). Enjoy your writing and keep writing well!
This answeres my question. Your books seem so well plotted out and always come full circle, I expected you to be an outliner. It is awesome hearing that just the opposite is true, as that is my style of writing as well. Someday I hope to write as well as you. Keep up the excellent work...love your novels.
Mr. Hosseini my favorite part of A Thousand Splendid Suns is how the story came full circle in such a way, I too would have assumed you plotted the storyline with the ending in mind. I am so impressed. Thanks for an Awesome read!
I always tell my daughter, a future novelist that every great writer spends time putting together an outline, so that the plot doesn't get lost, then adds other sub plots etc. Your books were some of my favorites, I guess there can be more than one way to create! Keep up the great work! I love hearing about this tragic part of the world, I hope that change for the better comes to Afghanistan soon.
So happy to hear this. This a sign of a true gifted storyteller. You can always tell when a book is over outlined and revised. It just doesn't have that flow. Your books are always a journey, and so moving. I look forward to your next gift!
I have also written this way. It's like something just takes over and you become a channel. It's quite magical--the whole process.
It has served me well also. I have always wanted to be a writer and maybe some day I will write something publishable. I feast at your "table"
Dear Dr. Hoseini,
I am a Lebanese woman that have read your books and admired the way you write, the way you present your characters and you unfold the events; a passionate writer even though your professional formation is a doctor. I have a technical question for you, when you first wrote the kite runner, did you finalize the book and then look for editors or you sought editors while working on your book. I am actually working on a book and I would like to learn from your experience…
PS.. My background is also not a writer but I love writing and I have a story to tell…
Thank you,
Best regards,
Dana
This explains what I hate and love most about Khaled, the glaring inconsistencies in the expected structure and the beauty that can only emanate from writing like this. Khaled, for the sake of sanity of your readers, do write a beautiful, positive story of Afghanistan, otherwise only the elements of your story would remain for me to piece together the country .
