The thing that makes me quite depressed is all the wonderful bookstores and media/record stores -- such as Borders and Media Play-- that have gone out business over the years. I miss going to each of the various stores to find books and/or media I can't find in the other stores. Also, I'd rather have the book or media...in hand, rather than using ipods or ereaders.
Janice, I work in an indie new & used, brick and mortar bookstore in a small town. We sell online to people all over the world too :) Id still shop here even if I didnt work here. There are only 5 of us (including the 2 owners) so we are able take care of each customer personally :)
Sounds fun. I love visiting the small indie bookstore anywhere I travel. Years ago,I even wanted to start a bookstore, but got int library aide work, instead...almost 30 years ago...and I don't plan to retire.
Whenever I travel I try to visit the local libraries. One of my favorites was in St Mary's, Ontario, where in the beautiful little town all of the old buildings are built of local stone from their old quarry--now a swimming pool, and the library was in the same building as the city hall (2000). Another library I loved back around 2000, was a old house that was used as a library in Waynesboro, PA, and had a cat mascot. Also I visited a used bookstore in Milton, Ontario that had 3 cat mascots.
