By now I might have found a pattern: the second book in a series is usually the darkest, with the third book the complete opposite, where all the problems in the second book seem to be resolved.
That's true of the first three books - Freefall was far less claustrophobic and not nearly as dark as Deeper (probably because I wasn't in such a dark place when I sat down to write it), although I did keep some of the problems ticking over!
