You have just inspired me to write reviews regularly on here. Thank you! <3
I signed up with GR to manage my list of books to read. The first thing that happened was that the list got longer.
When I have read a book, and am ready to give it a rating, I consider my review as an explanation of why I rated it that way.
When considering a book I've never before heard of, I look at how others have rated it, and read some examples of reviews by those who rated it lower than most.
I am glad I joined GR, and have made a friend or two as a result of contacting people who liked my review.
I signed up with GR for the same reason. I was losing track of what I had read, especially series that have gone on for years. I don't know why, but I can remember printed books but not all the e-books.
My approach to reviews, writing and reading them, is pretty much the same as Carol's. I rarely summarize the plot. It's about the quality of the mechanics of writing, whether it was a well-told story, and if the characters and world interested me. I look for the 3-star reviews to get a feel for a book I might be interested in reading.
