Thanks, I've been wondering about that myself.
If it helps, Lois, I caught that on the first reading, and loved it. "Lost causes are us."
That has always been one of my favorite lines in literature. It requires massive context but it speaks volumes in one short sentence.
Scott, I wish Goodreads had "like" on comments.
Interesting! I'd always interpreted it as a sign of stubborn persistence bringing hope after disaster - linked to his comments to Martin about it becoming usable land in his old age.
Memory is my favorite, too! I even managed to struggle through reading the Spanish translation this summer as a pandemic project. Boy was that painful, but it helped that I've read it so many times in English.
