Thanks, I've been wondering about that myself.
That has always been one of my favorite lines in literature. It requires massive context but it speaks volumes in one short sentence.
Interesting! I'd always interpreted it as a sign of stubborn persistence bringing hope after disaster - linked to his comments to Martin about it becoming usable land in his old age.
