Jessgoesnorth Interesting! I'd always interpreted it as a sign of stubborn persistence bringing hope after disaster - linked to his comments to Martin about it becoming usable land in his old age.

Melinda Memory is my favorite, too! I even managed to struggle through reading the Spanish translation this summer as a pandemic project. Boy was that painful, but it helped that I've read it so many times in English.
