Mara Gleb: I suspect that the writer of the article was being ironic. Otherwise, yes, a fool.

Carol It might make sense to say that the writer was little known outside the USA. I don't know if that's the truth, but certainly closer than the wording in the question.

Gleb writer of article wondered, what Mark Twain, writer little known in USA, is very popular in the Russia.

Danika Written by a fool. Mark Twain is required reading in most American high schools. There should be very few Americans that don't know who he is.

IndyGirl Glen--it would be extremely helpful to provide a link to the article so that we can understand the context.

IndyGirl Sorry. I meant Gleb. Autocorrect error.

message 7: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra I suspect it's ironic as well, 'cause Mark Twain is certainly required reading in my experience.

Jonathan Palfrey As an Englishman who’s hardly set foot in the USA, I’ve been aware of Mark Twain for most of my life, although I think I’ve read only one of his books (A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court).

Alexandra I know this is seven years late, but it could be an attempt at irony, in the style of Mark Twain himself…
